Huge respect to the previous record setters

Yes but when those records were set they didn't have the benefits of modern fitness regimes, lightweight clothing etc.
Just waiting for Mark Beaumont to do a talk on his round the world adventure at the Muckle Toon festival. He's just wheeled his bike in.

Mark talked about the penny farthing challenge which he treated as a bit of fun. There wasn't any intention of making anything of it but the BBC got hold of the story and ran it.
He explained the difficulties of handling a penny farthing at speed and the toll it took on him the next day (yesterday).
He said that he believed the world record would be easily achievable if planned properly.
He also said how he had huge respect for the previous record holders. Now where have I heard that before:whistle:

When the 'safety' bike began to take over, the high-wheelers became known as 'ordinaries'.

Just wondering how he would have got on riding in a indoor velodrome. The tarmac at Herne Hill looks a little coarse to me and it was a breezy day. Indoors on wood would likely be faster and maybe by enough of a gainful margin to make that extra 291 yards very possible.

On the other hand, doing it on an outdoor track would have been closer to the conditions that the WR would most probably been set under so it has a bit more authenticity....

Is the bike a blingtastic carbon fibre penny farthing, and is he allowed modern cheats like pneumatic tyres, and skin suits or is it tweed breeks etc?

Disc wheels might be a bit scary whatever the aero gains
