We don't seem to have a thread for castles. We have one for ruins, which fits most castled, but I don't think this one - Caerphilly Castle is really a ruin.

I always wonder how much it cost to build all these castles. Especially across Wales, when, apart from the heritage and a proud people, there wasn't much of value.

A lot of mineral wealth in north Wales (Romans were after it too) and they also didn't want the neighbours causing too many ructions

The amazing thing is, for some of Edward I's castles there is a very detailed inventory of how much things cost. The amount of records which have survived (not just for these castles) astounds me.

Penrice castle ('fortified' gatehouse)
View attachment 780010

That's not really Penrice castle. It is a gatehouse built in the 1770's at the same time a Georgian mansion behind it. Penrice castle is in the grounds of the mansion. There is a public footpath through the mansion grounds and you can see the castle from it, but you can't go in. I don't think it has ever been open to the public. A great shame because it looks fairly intact.
I got this information from a book - "Forgotten Castles of Wales and the Marches" by Paul R. Davis which is highly recommended.
