Fawlty Towers, on the other hand, still makes me wet myself. Manuel's "que?" has entered the English language!

Fawlty Towers WOULD still be funny IF IT HADN'T BEEN DONE TO DEATH!! I mean, I can see the humour, but we have all seen and heard of it so many times that quite frankly, it stopped being funny after about the 53rd time!!

A bit like the Dead Parrot sketch, it has been done some many times that quite frankly it is completely worthless now.

Perhaps a good test is "is it being done today?".

I have to agree MP was very hit and miss, and time hasn't been kind to some of the hits, but it was groundbreaking stuff at the time.

Possibly because it's not what a true Hispanic would say, according to my former Spanish teacher! What they would say, instead, is "¿Cómo?" Real put-down, that! But luckily, it didn't spoil my appreciation of the series.

We've got to remember that all comedy dates. People move on. Perceptions of humour change. Does one of Shakespeare's 'comedies' really sound funny to today's audiences? Shakes' evidently did all right out of them!

And as for the parrot sketch, me with my occasional foreign-language fetish, I did once try to translate the whole thing into French. Idiomatically, I mean. Somehow it didn't work out. There are a lot of French euphemisms for death, but phrases like "il mange des pissenlits par les racines" don't really ring true.

Probably it's been done already, anyway.

you could probably make fawlty towers today, with a few tweeks;

manuel would have to be east european (spaniards these days speak pretty good english)

the episode with the germans would not work as the humour relies on the germans being of an age to have been on the 'other' side in wwII

the episode with basil's intolerance of the unmarried couple could be tweeked to intolerance of a gay couple (and become topical into the bargain)

plenty of others too probably…
