My point being that putting slicks on a MTB gives you something so close to an average hybrid that it makes little difference. Except that you've still got a MTB for the times that you do what to go off road, where as a lot of hybrids use parts, like the forks for instance, that aren't really made for that.

I agree with most of that but since the 700c wheel size is part of what actually defines a hybrid a bike with 26" wheels simply doesn't qualify.

'Manufacturers' get it wrong on a regular basis.

I read a test somewhere, I can't remember where unfortunately, where they concluded that there was very little effective difference between 26'' and 700c wheels. It was swings and roundabouts.
