Swiss chard. Once the preserve of good lifers who were too useless to grow spinach - now bought by people with enormous beards on fixies.
Oh god yes. We grow it because it stands so long in bad weather but we hardly ever actually eat it except in curries. I grew proper spinach this year and it was wonderful, but it bolted of course.

The other thing is supermarket runner beans. NO. Always shoyte. Grow them or get them from a friend!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
What a bunch of moaners! (Apart from the bit about the Daily Mail - as I was queuing up at the checkout no fewer than three people reached over me to pick up their fix of misery, presumably because all the other aisles had run out)

I have cheerfully come back from the supermarket this morning with all of life's treats - @rvw is playing away this week so I've made hay with the things she likes less than me. Swiss chard (sorry @Ganymede - it's lovely stuff, and dare I say it better than spinach because of the stalks), cavolo nero, cobnuts, early apples, kidneys (sadly from down under - nothing fresh in stock apparently), and avocado.

And beer. Which is another thread in itself.

You know what - I've made a gratin with the stalks and I loved it. But when I pick a load for the greens I carefully collect the thick white stalks (I grow this variety especially) and then lose the energy to do it! (I'm currently injured so I have an excuse).

And what supermarket do you go to that stocks cobnuts!!?

Also - good hint, if you like cavolo nero, Russian red kale is worth a try, eveb better in my book, if you can lay your hands on it.

Waitrose, of course.

Mind you, I'm in Buckinghamshire. I presume they don't bother in rural Kent because they know you can just pop next door to the farmer.

Just because its on the shelf doesn't mean that it's being purchased.

If it's on the shelf regularly, then I'm afraid it does!
