I think the fame of that thing comes from a simpler age when folk hadn't travelled much.
I remember an acquaintance from the 80s going on holiday to copenhagen. Remember thinking/asking aloud, "why". He confirmed that it was a small statue in the harbour area.
I saw it in 1967 and it still didn't blow my socks off. As a kid, I found the adverts outside Copenhagen's porno cinemas far more overwhelming.

The Mona Lisa.. underwhelming
Yes. Brave post. Well said. Can anyone (non italian) explain its revered status. And for that matter the same chap's recent megabucks auction result. Not saying old leonardo wasn't some sort of wonder but have always been mystified by the mona lisa's supposed brilliance. Oh, and he didn't invent/sketch the bicycle.

Well i was going to say that when i was a kid as well that was actually denmark's great claim to fame. Now it's just bacon and cows and grass i suppose.

Two tourist towns: Bourton on the Water - twee and pretty granded but very tacky town containing nothing but jumper shops and tour buses.
We went on a school trip to BotW back in the eighties and I remember it being a lot of fun. We paddled in the river, went to the model railway, did some drawing, it was great. This year I thought we'd drop in as we were passing so I could show my wife this pretty village, and for the nostalgia, but it was awful. The locals have obviously spent the last thirty years working out the best way to cash in on their reputation, the place is just overrun with coach trips and has things like duck races on the water. It's lost its charm and I certainly wouldn't give a class of eight year olds the run of the place now. Don't think we'll be going back again.

Two year old enjoyed the model village though.

Speaking of Gloucestershire, how about Burford, a total cesspool of twee-ness visited by coachloads of Japanese tourists wearing face masks? It's quite surreal really.

I don't get it either, however, the bird sanctuary and arburitum just outside are rather good. I handled and flew several birds there a few years back and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Fair enough, I never visited those. I hold an enduring grudge against the place ever since having to deal with a tediously superior gentleman behind the counter of the Post Office there.

Must have been all of thirty years ago.......

I agree, the village itself far from delivers the hype, and as I recall the parking was about £6 for two hours.

Underwhelming:
Nottingham. I'd thought it was a big city.

Singapore.

Most British 'attractions' are "oh, right" rather than "wow".

Overwhelming:
The Alps
Sydney Opera House
Corcovado
Foz da Iguaçu
Ionian islands
Maldives
Manta Rays
Great Barrier Reef
Got to disagree about nottingham (other than the "castle"). A fine human town/city. Not everywhere has to brag. Spent some of my happiest years there.

THat you like it, I won't contest, but you're really saying it was overwhelming? I find that hard to believe.

Coming from London, I expected all cities to be huge. Therefore I was underwhelmed, literally.

Nottingham is a perfectly fine place, I will be spending Saturday evening there. Obviously I will be returning to Leicester as soon as I can:whistle:
Fond memories of the trip and the bell.

Oh tinpot, not looking for an a la politics squabble - no i didn't find nottingham "overwhelming" - guess my affection for it collided with the thread title and your response. Suggest you me and tvc meet for a drink in derby.
