When I look at the number of cars parked illegally on pavements, the litter of bollards, often bent from blind vehicles reversing, and other road infrastructure jamming up the pavements, there are so many of them that I think it's only natural that the car driving public have a real need for something to scapegoat. If all the cyclists went onto the road, they'd only complain about cyclists jamming up the roads.

Maybe we as cyclists should stop whining and start to educate the public about the difference between law-abiding sports cyclists and muppets who happen to be riding a bike.

Perhaps, before you get on to "the public", you could enlighten us as to this nature of this critical distinction?

My lawyer has advised me to say vigilante justice is wrong and illegal, and should not be condoned.

However leaving a bag of cat poo set on fire on someones doorstep, then knocking and running away, is a reasonable responsexx(

The editor should be fired or sued, for printing an enticement to break the law.

... and for not removing the out of place "be" in the article title! :headshake:

Which is which? And if I contend that it's perfectly possible to a "law-abiding sports cyclist" as well as a total muppet who happens to be on a bike?

You're being disingenuous. I admit that it's hard to know where to draw the line and everybody's definition of "proper cyclist" will differ but to my mind there's a difference between cyclists who take their sport or mode of transport seriously and those who don't care a damn about any aspect of riding a bike and view it merely as quicker than walking. I wouldn't even include those people in Tin Pot's 10% on this forum because the very act of logging in to a cycling forum for advice makes you someone who's serious about cycling.

No - I just don't buy the distinction. And I don't see anything wrong in people choosing to ride a bicycle just because it's quicker than walking. I've seen "serious" sport or transport cyclists with excellent bike-handling skills who are almost religious about obeying the law treat pedestrians and other kinds of cyclists with shocking contempt, and I've seen casual law-breaking pavement cyclists on dreadful old clangers bimble about without harming anyone.

Those who define themselves as a 'proper cyclist' whilst considering others not so are just plain pompous.

I spent £2,000 on my bike, therefore I've put myself on a higher pedestal than someone on a 'BSO'
I wear proper lycra cycling tights, therefore I've put myself on a higher pedestal than someone cycling in baggies
I have clipless pedals, therefore I've put myself on a higher pedestal than someone using flats or heaven forbid, old fashioned toe clips
and so on... it's just pomposity

and Mr Henshaw needs to get a life... then again, he's a got his name in a paper, and on the interweb, he's at least made a mark.
