It was a really odd set up near Bristol approaching a junction. I needed to go right.
I think that might be the problem, I thought, all junctions on motorways exit to the left

There are a few places where the that happens, particularly on the M5 heading east , once after the Clevedon Junction, and again before the Cribbs Causeway Junction, there's a merging lane on the M4 heading east, once after the M5/M4 interchange where cars on the left hand land may need to merge into the next lane depending on the status of the hard shoulder, and before Junction 18 for Bath, where the right hand lane becomes a 4th lane (where a crawling lane has been created for slow HGV's climbing up the Cotswold ridge) and then merges into the 3rd lane just at the top of the hill. It works if people see the signs and aren't obliviously speeding along at 100mph in their Audi or BMW.

Part of the problem is the language we use. 'Queues Likely' implies first in first out, which is daft because nobody's going to the same place.

Here for rides.
Problem with zipping is the nobber who races to the front at 80+, stands on the brakes, and swerves hard left, whether there is a gap to the left or not, bullying their way in via blunt force, causing all the drivers in their vicinity in the left lane to brake, which then ripples behind them, occasionally giving rise to rear-enders back down the line. Nobber drives on oblivious and feeling rather pleased.

What we need is "merge in turn" signs enforced by merge in turn cameras to change behaviours.

But then I LOATHE driving on UK motorways because of the aggression on display.

This.

The wuckfittery on the M3 between junctions 4 and 2 proves this.

I seldom drive, but it seems to me that you have accurately pinpointed the epicentre of wuckfittery.
...says Mr Volvo driver, who would probably be too busy tuning in to the Archers or Radio Cowhand to notice what was going on in his 50 metre bubble.
... and of course too old and infirm to do this on their tablet or mobile phone resting on the steering wheel

Correct, it is the ones in lane doing the blocking who are at fault though, not those on the outside lane trying to zip.
Sorry, I wasn't aware of the clause in the Highway Code where it states that Audi drivers should ignore the curved arrow signs indicating that other drivers should get into the inside lane.

It's the same one that tells Skoda drivers that they shouldn't let anyone in front of them.

Perhaps you could point me to the clause that tells the the guy blocking the middle lane not to let him zip in.

TBH, I rarely drive on motorways, so it does not cause me an issue, but it would be faster if everyone zipped correctly.
