as I said write out a list of colour combos and ask him to number them 1 to 10 1 being the best 10 is a no no.

Think you meant that the Dawes is about as good as the GT (not very?)

I will do the secret colour code test tonight... and will check back in the morning... what if he picks yellow/black?

i recommend at least consider the type of MTB with fairly slack angles - i.e. fairly sloping top tube, and forks at a noticeable angle from the vertical. They promote a weight-back style of riding which is conducive to better handling, and will enable you to master a more confident style of riding and ultimately have more fun when you're on an optimum trail.
