I have full mudguards on my commuting bike with the little extra mud flap things. Why is the outside of my rear mudguard the dirtiest bit of my bike??

Well it's been puzzling me. As you know, my bikes can rarely be described as clean but the outside of the mudguard is ready for the first potato planting of the year.

The muddy water will spray up off of the tyre, hit the end of the mudguard, where it will experience a small wing vortex effect.

This will effectively suck the water up and over the top of the mudguard.

I can answer this one logically. The outside of the mudguard is protected from all the spray thrown up by the tyres when riding on wet roads so the muck is not being rinsed away by this spray, Q.E.D
