Hello all,

After recently buying a new Whyte Hybrid bike which I'm thoroughly enjoying, now comes the time to focus on some essentials so that I can prepare for longer rides and have the necessary accessories needed to get myself out of any sticky situation.

I was wondering what recommendations any experienced riders had for the following:

  • Multi-toolset - I will need all the tools required for basic tasks and for any roadside repairs etc.
  • A pump, something small to medium in size that I can take on my journeys with me.
  • A puncture repair kit, tyre levers etc.
  • A subtle holdall or frame bag of some sort that can accommodate all of the above without jeopardizing the comfort and ride too much.
I already have a small saddle bag which I really like but this literally only holds my phone, keys and small items.

Here's a pic of my new bike for anyone interested ^_^

I don't really have a budget for all of the above items, I'm looking for quality, something that will be reliable and that will last but most importantly, do the job well!

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated :okay:

Cheers

You've listed everything you will need except spare tubes and chain link. I have a larger, only by a little, but similar bag to you. In this I pack:
  • Tubes x 2
  • Multi-tool - Lezyne
  • Cafe lock
  • Chain links
  • Patches
  • Adhesive
  • Zip ties
  • Pump on down tube - Lezyne
  • Tyre lever - Crank Brothers. Do look at this. Carried in jersey pocket
I have a cycling wallet in which I carry phone, money, credit card and house key. This I carry in a jersey pocket.

Your bike is new so it, and for that matter any correctly maintained bike, is extremely unlikely to suffer a mechanical which requires more equipment. Don't get obsessed with carrying the kitchen sink it's simply not necessary.

Punctures aside other than I snapped chain I have never experienced a mechanical needing roadside repair. I did once have a bottom bracket which showed signs of failing so I headed home early.

Oh last point. Be sure to talc your tubes. It makes putting a tyre back on very simple.

Don’t forget to always carry the Whyte wheel lock tool!
Personally I don‘t carry anything in jersey pockets due to discomfort and sweatiness, I don’t even always wear a jersey not least!
Get a bigger saddle bag and maybe a tri bag. put phone on handlebars?

I prefer to carry my keys, phone and credit cards on me so I don’t have to worry about taking them off the bike if I stop for a rest (and it’s not a utter disaster if the bike gets nicked). I suspect if you do that, your saddlebag will take an inner tube, tyre levers, multitool etc, with a pump on the down tube.

if I’m commuting and don’t want anything on the bike, I use a small bumbag and stick everything in there. On a road bike, I will usually be wearing a cycling jersey with three rear pockets so plenty of room for phone etc.

As an ex Whyte owner I most heartilty agree with this and would also suggest investing in a second one as a back-up to keep at home.

Thanks for all your responses.

So after quite a few hours trawling through bike accessories, I've gathered the following inventory:

- For spare tubes, my tyres are Maxxis Rouler 700x28c (no idea what the current tubes are) so I'm looking at 2 of these '700 x 28-32c 40mm Presta: 115g', there seems to be quite a few options to choose from but I went for the medium weight. Am I right to assume heavier is more robust, lighter is better for speed but more likely to puncture?

- For Multi-tool, this might be overkill but I'm thinking I'd rather have too much than not enough:

- For puncture repair kit I'm thinking either of these two, not sure yet:

or
https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Ice-Toolz-Puncture-Repair-Kit_117895.htm

- Pump, I was already recommended this one:
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/pumps/black-large-lezyne-road-drive-abs-frame-pump/

- For a frame bag, I quite like the look / idea of this one, I'm not after anything bulky, I want to keep it minimal and enough to carry the multi-tool and pump:
https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Topeak-Fast-Fuel-Tribag_89955.htm

For bike locks and chain spares I have no idea, my chain is currently a 'SRAM PC-1031 / 10 speed'. As for a lock I will certainly get a solid lock which I'll keep in the bike rack at my work location when and if we return to our work place, once this pandemic settles.

However in the meantime, these cafe locks do look like a good idea. Until I start commuting to work, I would like a lightweight lock where I can leave my bike for 10 minutes to go to a shop or something but again not too sure!

I also need some recommendations on bottle cages please ^_^

What colour cages do you want? How much do you want to spend? Plastic or metal?

You want SRAM quick links 10 speed

i wouldn’t use a cafe lock even for 10 minutes, or any sort of cable. Get a small D lock and mount on frame. This should be deterrent enough https://shop.greenflag.com/product/...MI4eiqlPTK6QIVwrHtCh3aDwLYEAQYAiABEgKf5vD_BwE
Or something like a Abus bordo

is the bike insured?

Yes, great idea, I have the Whyte wheel lock, presumably these can only be purchased from Whyte directly?
I am planning to get a phone holder for the handlebars, it's only in the meantime until I get some better accessories, I just don't like having things in my pockets unless I have a zipper.

What recommendations do you have for a tri bag?

Thanks again for your useful advice

That mini D-Lock looks decent, I will probably get that one.

I know what you mean about the cafe lock, they seem super practical but I wouldn't feel confident at all leaving it for more than 10 minutes, or as you say, anymore than that.

No I've not really thought about insurance, it's in my garage at night and it's not left my sight when I'm out on it, I need to look into this too!
