Grumblin at Garmin on the Granny Gear
I was reminded of this by the discussion of all the building going on. My grandmother used to live in the street below. She used to speak of how, when they were children they used to go into the field at the back of the garden, sit in the field & eat 'bread & cheese' (aka hawthorn leaves).

The satellite image below shows the houses that have been built since, early last century.

A lovely warm and mostly sunny day here chez Casa Reynard, but out of the shelter of the trees, there's quite a brisk breeze.

Slept well, and spent the morning puttering about in the garden. OK, a lot of that was spent watching Madam Poppy enjoying the great outdoors, pogoing around and chasing butterflies and the like. She does alright for a nearly 14 year old cat. Madam Lexi also spent the morning outside, but she just found a sunny spot to have a nice snooze.

I potted on the basil plant I bought yesterday, and it looks a lot happier. I bought the "Finest" basil rather than the standard one, because the leaves were so much more aromatic. I didn't mind spending the extra 30p, and it'll do us all summer long and into the autumn for salads and probably a batch of pesto or four...

The tomatoes are coming on nicely too. Both the Tumbling Toms are flowering, as is the Moneymaker.

Anyways, it is time for luncheon, and I has a hungry.

Urgh, got up at 7am to a long list of jobs. Sort kitchen cupboards, remove old condiments, sort shelves, sort son's medication cupboard, tidy shed, tidy garage and a tip run (car was full). Finished all this around 12. Then went out on my bike for 90 minutes, taking the CX bike over one of my MTB routes, didn't die.

Now for a beer.

Where do all these people come from because the houses here aren't bought by locals ?

Well Maz's Daughter and her husband live down that way now after many years living all over the place but Ian is a Wiltshire man but spent many years in the Army* (full 25yrs and get's his full pension) and one of their daughters lives in a flat in Marlborough with another living nearby whilst the eldest married a guy from Leicester so they live up here.
Wiltshire is a desirable location for people leaving London though after selling their houses for a fortune to developers who modify them into flats that are then let to immigrants/asylum seekers** many of whom see London as a desirable place to live though gawd knows why (Having done work down there for years as an exhibition/shopfitting contractor I hate the place)

* Jo and Ian's wedding made the front page of the Leicester Mercury with the headline "Local girl weds Gulf War Hero" after she replied to an appeal for pen friends for the Soldiers over there, they subsequently met and married (BTW Ian served in both of the Gulf Wars driving Ammunition trucks, Fuel Bowsers and Supplies up to the 'front line'

** Don't think I'm being racist by this, merely making an observation I grew up with an Antiguan Uncle who came over in the 50's and married my Father's elder Sister and he came to Leicester because of the thriving West Indian community here.

Dry most of the day but now raining.
Went up to visit my wildlife pal but he is off attending to family business so I watched the swallows going in and out of his shed where they nest every year.
Where I live there have been no swallows seen for years as all outbuildings they used in the past have been converted into holiday lets. Same as the cuckoos which have been driven out of hearing range.
Got home and the front tyre on the trike was flat. AAARGH.
This sits in the car between the driver and passenger seat so propping it up to get the wheel off required a bit of thought and a couple of lengths of wood. Nothing tp be seen on the outside so off with the tyre. Still nothing obvious so I had to resort to something I have not done for years. Immerse the tube in water. Leaky presta valve so fit a new tube and to my surprise I got the Schwalbe Marathon tyre back on with hands only. Surprise since I have rheumatoid arthritis which affects my hands.
Getting the wheel back on was fairly easy despite the very cramped conditions and lowering again was easier than lifting it.
A couple of new tubes ordered as I only have one spare now.

Back from ride, and MrsF says she has flowers to put in the window box at the front. Except its been falling to bits for a while. One side had drooped as the internal wood supports had turned to mush. Out with the car jack, bit of wood and jacked it back up straight. Then shot in a few big screws into sound wood. Said window box no longer wonky, but needs a paint. Flowers planted

Had a lovely luncheon of toast with the last of the filet americain, plus a pear, an apple and two :cuppa:

Spent the afternoon puttering about in the garden again. Moved all the stuff I clipped the other day and dumped it in a pile in the wood. The large cherry tree that dropped the branch that I'm in the middle of clearing up looks to be dead, so I shall begin dismantling that in the near future. Will make for good firewood.

Now sat listening to Forest v Arsenal on the radio.
