Oh dear, I never did get the hang of that move or what it was supposed to achieve. ^_^

The object of chess is to checkmate (capture) the king. Castling (swapping King and Castle / Rook) usually puts the king in a better defensive position with pawns protecting in front, castle protecting kings flank, and Queen and Castle aligned protecting each other, with Bishop joining in as well if not taken.

Cold 🥶 northerly blowing on a 3.5 hour ride. Where did signs of Spring go? Good morning out regardless.

Thank you for that explanation. If her grandson progresses with his Chess, he can have the pleasure of teaching that move to his Grandma.

In other news, Pancakes again tonight, which is three times in ten days.

A picture a thousand words

Both White and Black have castled here. You can see it’ll take a lot of work to get at the Kings. They are well defended.

Thank you @Ming the Merciless

Yes, I can understand the reason for it now. For a beginner, it might be a step too far, when they are trying to remember all the moves. Or does it make the game more interesting/challenging?

Makes the game last longer and avoids the easy mistake that’s leads to checkmate within a few moves. It’s usually done at beginning of game. Move pawn so Kings bishop can move out of way as well as knight. Do the castle and King now well protected. Then concentrate on next stage of game.

But if a beginner just start with the basic moves a piece can make. Don’t punish mistakes, and go from there.

Footy listened to. Good result for us, though we was robbed of two further goals by more VAR howlers.

Time for a :cuppa: and then I'll slope off to watch the Formula E on catch up.

Suggest you undertake those moves for her while explaining how each piece moves, while not doing it for yourself with the consequence her subsequent moves you probably do for her result in you being checkmated. Always helps learning not to be defeated initially.
