@AlBaker - I've taken a photo of the miles to empty and I hope they've recorded it.

I'll stick some diesel in tomorrow and will return it at the same amount.

It's been a really cold, four-seasons-in-one-day kind of day here chez Casa Reynard, but with the addition of a biting NW breeze.

Did not sleep well, as my back had seized up. Ah well, hey ho. Rattled through the chores, dodging some fairly biblical showers, and yes, it was slippy underfoot too.

Lovely luncheon of a toasted ciabatta roll with cheddar & smoked kipper pate, a tangerine, a pear and a :cuppa:

Topped up the firewood in the house, then I treated myself to a nice long soak in the bath as I was feeling so very cold. It was lovely just to relax in the blissfully hot water and read.

Have spent the rest of the afternoon / early evening watching action from Milano Cortina and doing some writing.

Sounds like the best possible situation for trainspotting, and the worst possible situation for peace and quiet.

For a main line, it's actually pretty quiet. Passenger traffic is usually two or 3-car DMUs, plus freight hauled by (mostly) class 66 locoa, which probably is the bulk of what goes up and down here. It's nothing like the main arteries into major cities, where something rumbles past every few minutes.

You don't actually notice the passenger traffic (the trees damp down the noise), but you can definitely feel the bigger freight trains coming through, as the house vibrates. When we still had analogue TV, it used to make the picture jump and jiggle.

Yes, the normal alternate to it being full is to return it with the same amount of fuel in it although that can be pretty awkward to estimate when filling up hence the full tank approach often employed.

I just read that the compo for late train journeys is to be altered (in their favour, no doubt).
The 15/29 minutes late is to be done away with. Compo only starts @ 30 mins.
Shouldn't affect my claims too much as if there's a problem it's normally with connections at Peterborough. Outbound delays are 1 hour, homebound are 2 hour thanks to the frequency of the trains. Thankfully I've not had to submit one for a while.
