Scottish bagpipes aren't a musical instrument, so they don't count.

Soprano sax is definitely grating. If those who play it would do so for the minimum amount of time, it might - might provide a nice change from alto or tenor. But they can't ever seem to put them down once they've started.

Some pianists definitey grate.

C'mon guys, the Alto and Tenor Saxophones are great instruments, full of Soul, suitable for Jazz, Blues, Soul, Rock, Gospel, 50's Rock 'n roll, Latin-American, Funk, hell even marching bands... a wide repetoire, it's dynamic and has a range of timbres. It's even relatively easy to play and a great instrument for beginners to start to make their own music.

I agree Kenny G is shoot, but that doesn't make the Sax a bad instrument

Currently I'm learning to play this:

Or this from Miles Davis (Trumpet) and Cannonball Adderley...

I'm gonna go practice now...

Jazz without saxophones would be like Italian cooking without garlic or tomatoes: inconceivable and probably best left untouched ... BUT (that's a big but notice) squeaky is right out, hence soprano saxes should be bent on sight let alone on hearing. You might be able to get away with your alto sax because that's the one that's even lower than a tenor isn't it?

How can you NOT like these instruments?

Sax: Hazel O'Connor

I think the only violin playing I like is by that French geezer who used to plaz jazz with Django Reinhardt ... and the name is ... (scratches memory) ... Stephan Grapelli.

Hi Andy

Alto Sax sits between the Soprano and the Tenor. In Pick-up-the-pieces, the Alto is the higher of the 2 Saxes, the Tenor the larger lower instrument.
Alto sax range starts just below Middle C and goes up just over 2 Octaves...

I think seperating the instrument from the style of music, I wouldn't listen to David Sanborn/Kenny G warbling, but like the playing on Dave Brubeck, same with the Soprano Sax, much is kack, but on Lou Reed's Perfect Day or Sting's Englisman in New York it does it's job pretty well.

"Good ;)" examples here...

I can see that it's not everybodies cup of tea.

I think I see what you mean ... got it! In other words you're learning an instrument which has got a very small number of tunes the playing of which won't get you shot by your listeners. Check out the sax playing on Midnight Blue album by Kenny Burrell (a guitarist as it happens). Deeper prolongs longevity, trust me.;)
