My car conked out today!

Coil Pack(s) may be dying or dead, was the engine running rough/missing?
Edit: Could be anything to be fair, if a sensor isn't getting read correctly it'll play up, but actually it could be a fuel pump playing up if it's an electric fuel pump

Probably / hopefully just a sensor. But would highly suggest getting breakdown cover. AA / RAC overrated, personally the family uses green flag.

Do you have an OBD or OBD2 reader or access to one?
Plug it in and you should get the fault code(s).
Look it/them on t'interernet.

When you wrote "I turned the ignition off then on trying to fire my car up again there was nothing at all!" I took that to mean that the battery is flat. That could have happened if the alternator has failed - the running symptoms you described could fit with that too.

I asked about warning lights on the dash. Usually the battery light would come on to show the battery is not being charged by the alternator when the engine is running.

Do you have a car battery charger / jump pack / jump leads?

It's impossible to say with a modern car, and just don't keep driving it. This is where a 'reader' comes in useful. I had to buy another recently, although this one was an upgrade on one I had previously, and in that one use it covered it's costs in garage labour (just needed it to change rear pads with an electronic handbrake).

My Volvo did this to me the other weekend, went into limp mode (got the 12V battery critical fault warning) on the M4 M25 junction.

Flat bed rescue home / to dealership. Turns out it was a loose connection on the battery terminal - some prawn had apparently over tightening it and striped the threads, thus rendering it loose. Fixed gratis under Volvo approved used warranty.

A "reader" is only any use if you have some idea what you are doing to fix whatever fault comes up!

Had a similar problem on a VW many years ago, just kept going into limp mode. Dealer had the car in for weeks, changing various bits and giving it back only for it to re-occur. Eventually we gave up and traded it in, even though it was still in the dealer workshop at the time. They gave us the full market price and accepted that they needed to fix it before they could resell it.

I associate "conked out" with driving in the 1980's and failing to adjust the choke correctly!
