Just to put some of the posts about average speed in perspective. Ride of the day yesterday for me was Mary Dawson of the Teeside RC who posted a time of 1-23-20 an average speed of a fraction under 18 mph. This amazing lady is 83 years of age.

Wow!

Glad she doesn't live near me. I'd have ended up giving up cycling, couldn't have coped with being overtaken by an 83 year old!

An amazing lady

Just to put some more perspective on that race, my better half dr_pink decided the course was too dangerous and didn't enter. In the event one of the ladies Jane Kilmartin was hit by a car and broke her back. Incredibly the TT continued despite this accident and some really atrocious weather, not taking anything away from Mary or Hutch [who averaged 31.9mph in terrible conditions] but in our, and many others opinions this should not have gone ahead.
Apologies for the minor hijack.

Sorry to hear about that accident I wasn't aware of that. Just wanted to bring attention to this amazing lady.
It doesn't surprise me that the event went ahead in dangerous conditions Cycling time trials have a way of defending the indefensible.

Any links? A quick google throws up a list of VTTA record holders with her name on it, but a 'story' would be good.

I'd like to show my 83 year old Mother in Law , she's fantastically fit by 83 year old standards but a recent bout of illness has left her a bit down and doubting whether she should / can keep walking 3 or 4 miles a day. This may help to convince her that she can keep going:smile:

That is absolutely incredible at that age. If I manage half that speed at that age I'd be over the moon.

Sorry to hear about the accident though

Here is a link to the time trialling forum with an opening post by Jane who incredibly was able to write this somehow from her hospital bed. We have sent her a message but I am sure that all on here who read this would also want to send their best wishes, you don't have to know a fellow cyclist.

Please pass on my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. I hope that doesn't sound trite - as someone who suffered fairly serious injury in a road accident some years ago I think I can empathise with the fact that the recovery process can be long and painful.
