I went on a bike ride this morning, and on at least 15 different roads there wasn't a single sign explicitly telling me the road was open.

This is an outrage!

Chester and Cheshire west who paid for it to constructed seem to think its open as they just admitted responsibility for an unmarked speed bump causing my friend to fall and get injured.

I'd stay away though Neil and wait for the official opening

I remember you telling us about that a while back, how is your friend? I think he had a back injury and had to stay in hospital?

My friend kind of got off lightly, road rash to his arm and shoulder, his bike took a knock (carbon). Another guy though had fallen minutes before us and he hurt his back and spent a couple of week in hospital. Solicitors involved and working out compensation

A public road without a sign is outrageous - oh hang on that was a poor attempt at satire wasn't it - like this is :-)

Let's hope they both recover well. I remember the speed hump before it was painted, kind of feel guilty for not pointing it out now as I've been riding down that road/path for years and knew it was there. Easy to forget it was attracting a whole new wave of cyclists.

I'd ridden that way only a couple of days before and never really thought about it. Apparently the owners of the house had reported it on several occasions and needed to call out ambulances before. Lets hope that's the end of accidents down there

I finally used it today just to see what the route is like. Mixed really, though my view is coloured by the howling gail and rain I was battling through. Quite bleak on the marshes on a day like today.

I won't be using that stupid path with the speedbumps and gravel, it's shoot. I will use Denhall Lane and Station Road.

As ever with Sustrans routes, they leave me with mixed feelings. I'd rather be on the road than arsing about in bleak industrial estates but I have to admit, it's useful to have it.

I've been in touch with Sustrans about the gravel, as it was they who approved it. It's upset a few people, including me! It demonstrates what the public think in general, that cyclists shouldn't have it too good. First they built the facility, then it was excellent, then they added speedbumps (no idea why, there's no speedbumps on any local roads) then the final insult is cover it with half an inch of loose gravel.

Anyway, Sustrans say that they have been supported by 'local cycling groups' as they reckon it will keep the 'speed cyclists' away, or make them slow down.

I have no idea what is going on in their heads. I guess you get the facilities that you deserve when Sustrans are involved. They do tell me that excess gravel will be swept, but I think it will still be shoot even then.

I reckon they are all built with a 1950's three speed Triumph in mind, ridden by a bloke with a flat cap, tweed jacket and trouser clips. They certainly don't cater for any bike with less than 32mm tyres on. And they need to cut the weeds down in the cattle grid, either that or get the army to shoot the tops off them.

I was on my mtn bike yesterday, so the speed bumps didn't really bother me but I won't bother going that way on the road bike.

At the Wirral cycle forum it was mentioned that the speed bumps had to be included to stop cyclists going too fast on what is a mixed use path. It appears it was a condition of the path - this came up as a solution to the increase in anti-social cycling on the Wirral Way - though it is being resisted (the first step is share nicely or whatever the Chester Greenway has on the signs and tarmac).
I don't believe humps like at Burton work (tarmac one by the proto new cafe took a roadie down though) more just an annoyance - the narrowing effect of the shared use bollards are more effective.
The gravel is to reduce visual impact of tar so it resembles look of the previous path, and if it discourages cyclists then no-one but us will care. Anyone from Chester/Cheshire know why that brick section in the middle is still there?

I still haven't worked this out!

It looks like they've given up on fixing the big gate by the Harp, it was clanging shut and annoying neighbours I think. I have a suspicion that someone 'fixed' it.

Blimey. I never did this intended route. I must stick it on the agenda for later in the year.
