If anyone is planning to cycle the NCN 20, Walney to Wear past Durham, you had better bring a boat. The bridge taking the official route over the Wear (Pennyferry Bridge) is currently underwater at one end. I'd guess it's about 5 feet deep. The route is flooded further upstream as well (alongside the Racecourse).

Your best route past would be to pick up the main road A690 (to Sunderland) underneath the railway viaduct and then folow this to the A181 (Hartelepool). Follow the A181 till the traffic lights with TK Max on the left. Turn left here and you'll be back on the W2W again (directions assume you are travelling West Coast to East Coast - reverse them if travelling the other way).

I suspect that the route will be unridable for up to 2 weeks after the floods have subsided because of fallen trees, thick mud and other debris.

Have fun !
