Over the weekend, we found two old car wheels dumped in the little area of waste that everyone has between the shed and the party fence at the far end of our garden. It would be quite difficult to put them there from our side as firstly, there's a substantial shrub in the way, and secondly the neighbours on the other side are a couple who are observant in the way that retired people often are when they're at home most of the time.

Thus we are reasonably certain that they were dumped by the neighbours on the other side, as we know they can be a bit cavalier with regard to rubbish generally (3-4 bin liners by the roadside on a Wednesday morning), and also that the partner of our neighbour runs a car workshop locally.

I say reasonably certain, and there's the rub - we can't prove it, since we didn't see the deed done. So we cannot accuse with impunity.

Knowing how neighbourly disagreements over really trivial stuff can escalate into much bigger disputes, this is the last thing we want.
Equally we don't want any further junk chucked on our side of the fence.

How do we deal with this? Should we quietly and discreetly dump the wheels back on their side on the basis that equally they cannot prove we did it?

Anyone have any good ideas, please?

Yes, dump it back during the night and watch what happens.

You cannot be certain they dumped them. As you say you have no evidence. Putting them back in their garden during the night is going to aggravate the situation as they will know it was you. The only answer is to approach them and ask them. That's perfectly reasonable. If the say no it wasn't them, then elicit their help in getting rid of offending items. If they say yes then politely ask them to move. If they admit it was them and they refuse then smack them in the mouth.

If you can deposit them unobserved into their front garden you will be able to challenge them if the wheels subsequently reappear behind your shed - how did they know the source of them?

Another good idea! Last week I sold a bent alloy wheel to a scrappie and to my amazement he gave me £9.40 for it! I'd have been delighted with the price of a beer.

I wouldn't bother- life's too short- just take them to the dump and see if anything else happens and then tell each neighbour what's been going on and ask them if they've seen anyone lurking.

Put them outside your front gate with a for sale sign, someone will come along and nick them

1. Silly answer. Take a couple of wheels off the neighour's car and replace them with the dumped wheels. Then flog the good wheels on Ebay....

2. Boring, 'sensible' answer. Go to your nearest CAB (Citizen's Advice Bureau). They can advise on this sort of thing. Dumping rubbish on someone else's private land is illegal.

can you plant them up and leave them in the centre of some mini roundabouts ?

+1 about planting them up.

Fill them up with soil and plant some tatties in them. Start with a small amount of soil to begin with and then as the potato plant grows add more soil. This way you get a good yield from them.

Take them round to the chap's garage business and ask him, innocent like if he'd like to buy them cheap. Tell him some "**************************************************" (insert really really insulting and degrading epithet) dumped them in your garden.....

i lived in a converted house (5 flats) we had a large communal bin, some of the peanuts who lived there couldnt be bothered to lift the lid on the bin,but would just dump the rubbish bags next to the bin so the foxes would rip them open scattering rubbish all over the place,I once went through the bag to see if i could find any junk mail with an address then dumped the bag on their doorstep ripped open even more.they didnt learn as i had to do it more than once!!!
