So I just massively upgraded from a carrera zelos from eBay (2013) to a 2014 boardman pro carbon. Just did a 19k which i do for a bit of hill training now and again. Now don't get me wrong I PR'd most of the climbs (on starva) but i'm literally ruined. I never had to shift down on to the little cog on the zelos but found myself doing it on the boardman. I'm still a relative beginner to cycling so what could be reason behind the extra suffering. Weather is a bit crap today and i'm also pretty tired, but still. Could it be the range of the gearing I'm not used to, I've gone from shimano tourney to shimano 105. Maybe I was just having a bad day???

The answer is likely in your available gear ratios. What were you using before and what do you have now?

What is the gearing of the two bikes?

And if you went faster up the hills it's not entirely surprising you are beat, Unless you've lost a load of weight and gained a
load of fitness since getting the new bike

yeah i'm comparing pr's from previous rides and i pretty much smashed them all. i'm just disappointed that on longer climbs i might have to shift onto the small cog.......oh the shame.

Gears are there to be used, nothing wrong in using the easiest gear when needed.

That is just silly. What about when you are doing steep climbs? Do you stubbornly grind a big gear rather than use a better gear just because it would take you out of the big ring.
