climbs for cake

So I just massively upgraded from a carrera zelos from eBay (2013) to a 2014 boardman pro carbon. Just did a 19k which i do for a bit of hill training now and again. Now don't get me wrong I PR'd most of the climbs (on starva) but i'm literally ruined. I never had to shift down on to the little cog on the zelos but found myself doing it on the boardman. I'm still a relative beginner to cycling so what could be reason behind the extra suffering. Weather is a bit crap today and i'm also pretty tired, but still. Could it be the range of the gearing I'm not used to, I've gone from shimano tourney to shimano 105. Maybe I was just having a bad day???
