That is just silly. What about when you are doing steep climbs? Do you stubbornly grind a big gear rather than use a better gear just because it would take you out of the big ring.

what was doing is going up in my lightest big chainring gear then dropping a gear and getting out the saddle.........it worked a treat. lot of short steep climbs here as opposed to lengthy ones. your right of course, i've said to my mates on numerous occasions to use the gears thats why they're there.

I know exactly what you're saying. For some reason I started to want to spin the big ring all the time. It just felt right.

Last ride I decided to stop all that bollarks and actually use my gears. Turns out I can happily spin 19mph on the small ring. Kinda feel like the 34 is wasted on me though. Would like to change to a 39.

Going by the photo on your other post you don't have 105 you have tiagra shifters tiagra front derailleur and 105 rear derailleur, also the crankset is the fsa gossamer which is a compact 50/34

So you were cross-chaining (Big-Big) going up a hill, sounds like a recipe for breaking a chain to me.

You're carrying the small chainring around with you, you might as well let it be of some use. When you come to replacing the outer ring you're very likely to find it's also got another small ring so there's little point in having an unused ring on the old one.

The pro carbon comes with an 11-25 10 speed 105 ( this year's model has an 11 speed) cassette, and a compact up front. I found it to be a nightmare. I changed the cassette for an 11-28 10 speed cassette, it feels much better now.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, a bike goes as fast as you pedal, and how fast you pedal depends on fitness and gears. You seem to be adverse to going into the smaller chainring for some reason, yet are happy to carry the weight of it around ?

Bikes are different, and they have a different range of gears, but for 90% of the time nearly every bike will have the correct gear for you. It will not be the same combination of chainring and rear sprocket on each bike, but the ratio you want will be there.

Check out http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/ if you don't understand ratios

Yes that's right, I have no problem using the small chainring the problem I find is shifting mid climb from big to little means there's about a second of mad leg spinning, which isn't any help on the busy traffic heavy hills I'm going up. Basically I like to keep the speed constant.

If it makes you feel any better i got my wife a specialized Dolce road bike to help her improve her speed on ride outs, as her fat tyred 29mtb was hard work on tarmac...

compleate waste of 700 quid..she is hopeless on the road bike..in fact id keep up on a foooking skateboard..

Get into the small ring sooner. Your knees will thank you. Should be avoiding cross chaining also
