Ok I have finally managed to convince the trouble and strife that I need and an upgrade however after my original suggestion of a ti van nicholas 
the budget has been set at £ 350 
I am currently riding an 80's dawes running sachs huret down tube shifters (which I think I will to convert to fixed).
I was thinking that I will probably get more value for money second hand rather than new and just wondered what minimum set of components I should be looking at. 105 and above or would tiagra be a good starting point ?
