New tyre for trainer

Ok so quick question I need some new rubber for the turbo trainer. Would you go for a training tyre at a higher price or just purchase a normal tyre cheap tyre that will wear quicker. Not sure which would be more economical.

If you have a turbo dedicated bike or wheel there's no real reason to not use a turbo tyre

I am going to use the part worn Giant standard tyres on mine, but would buy a Turbo specific tyre if needing to buy one.

Surely you must have bought a tyre specifically for the Turbo by now then? Or do you do loads of miles on the road and buy new ones for that before the old ones have worn out?

Part worn on a turbo lasts me a couple if not more years.

Road tyres get changed more often.

Interesting. Have done a grand total of 20 mins on mine since getting it yesterday, so just guageing how long mine will last. No hurry for a while then, as have the pair to get through.

Much the same as on the road, keep the pressures up and also do not load the roller too much.

I recently put a bike with road tyres (Clement) on the turbo before I had the time to change and after only 1 hour I can see the wear, I changed to the 3 year old Vittoria trainer tyre that shows no signs of wear today. The trainer tyre is more economical by far especially if you blow the tube as well when the tyre burns through.

No part worn tyres just a spare set of winter 32c's tyres to give slightly more grip on the road. Sounds very much like i should get a turbo specific tyre looking at the comments.

Right decided to go with dedicated trainer tyre. Just one question i'm looking at eventually getting a spare 700c wheel to save having to keep swapping tyres around. I can find a reasonable rear wheel compatible with a 9 speed shimano cassette. What i'm looking for is the rear cassette at a reasonable price. I have a Shimano HG-50, 9-speed, 11-30 cassette currently fitted on my main wheels. I'm a novice when it comes to replacing / changing cassette but was wondering if i could use any shimano 9 speed cassette without the need of adjusting derailor etc (so literally just swap out one rim for the the other) or will i need the same type cassette on the spare wheel?

Oh and also my bike is fitted with disc brakes so was planning on running the rear tyre on the trainer without a brake hooked up. I trust this is ok and won't affect my choice of rear rim?

You won't need a brake but if it is your intention to use the bike on the turbo and on the road with just a switch of back wheel you will need the same set up on both otherwise you will be faffing with derailleur each time. I am not familiar with disk brakes but I imagine there will be unconnected cables that will need securing before sweating on the turbo.

Thanks for confirmation that was my thinking of what I needed if I went for a second rim. With regards to disc brake I have cable version and never had to dis connect cables when removing rear wheel before. I'm sure it will be fine as long as I don't press the brake lever which would close the calipers whilst I have the trainer rim in.
