Newbie - what to look for in a helmet?

Is one helmet much the same as another or are there things to look out for?

I am one of the many returning to the sport after a long lay off and felt it necessary to purchase a new lid. So acting on advice from this forum I wandered into my local LBS (Leslie Bike Shop) near Glenrothes, Fife and when asked I told them what I wanted and why. The gentleman behind the counter said 'I've just the thing' and parked a Specilised Air Force on my barnet. Once he had fitted it I asked for a price, just coppers short of 25 notes he replied. So I took it and he was spot on. (Note the review in full, which I discovered post purchase)

With the advice gathered from this forum why not nip in to your LBS you may be as surprised as I was.
