NHS nurse given a rental Mercedes

Read that an NHS nurse was given a rental Mercedes for her work that she is allowed to take home. No idea what the model is. I get the part that they have to travel and a vehicle is necessary. Don't they have a car pool that they can take a car for that day. Are they allowed to use their own car and claim mileage?

Anyone knows.

Not come across that one before for front line staff, very senior nurses can get the equivalent of "crown cars" as they qualify as senior management.

Nurses like most nhs staff can get cars via salary sacrifice.

Those Carers, Midwives, Community Nurses etc who have to travel routinely tend to use their own cars as a rule, and they claim the mileage. And yes some trusts do have limited pool vehicles, that's not so common though and they don't get taken home. Where was this story from?

My mum was a community midwife and used her own car, charging mileage for wear and tear.
There was a scheme to lease a car and you could use it for personal mileage, a bit like a company car. But I suspect every trust has different policies.

I too had the same impression.

Various media articles said just a nurse at a Manchester Hospital. Her LinkedIn also shows as staff nurse. Press articles also mentioned that she owns a BMW but the Mercedes was rental car hired by NHS. So it cannot be a salary sacrifice.

In the corporate world, the practice is salary sacrifice or you claim mileage on your own car. You can rent if you fly out for work and pick a car at destination for the days you are out.

Our local medical practice obviously has a fleet of cars as they are sometimes all lined up at the surgery. All same model and colour from the same dealer with consecutive number plates. Usually Fiesta size but each community nurse has her “ own” car.

I strongly suspect THE ' hired by the NHS' is poor journalism. Having worked both in the NHS and Local Authorities and having had a 'lease car' (not now) - you can 'theoretically' choose any car you want, though you have to pay for it. Lease cars tend to come through large specialist dealers, who get a significant reduction in price off manufacturers. When you take out the lease you have to estimate your personal mileage (& are taxed on this quite highly) - then you have to estimate your business, mileage and if you go over either, you get hammered with tax. The bigger the car the more you pay. You have it for 3 years then it goes back. It's just a lease deal, in short, and at the end of the year I had a wack of money taken off my tax allowance. The car she had was a hybrid so there may have been Govt incentives, we don't know her job as a nurse and she might have been a well-ish paid nurse manager. Though the disturbing bit for me is the attempted murder / shooting bit...

I'm not sure where you're going with this. Trying to understand NHS transport logistics, or somehow trying to figure out if you should approve or not what happened?

I expect she needed a car and a car was provided. 🤷‍♂️

Who knows the circs? Occasionally in the popice an officer might get sent on a course or suchlike in another part of the country, and quite often they'd be hired a car.

Usually it would be a Corsa or such, but i once threw my teddies and pointed out that being the size I am I can barely sit beyond the wheel of a Corsa, could not close thendrivers door while sested, much less operate one (I knew this as my eldest had a Corsa herself at the time) so they would have to get me something a little larger

I was expecting a basic Focus, and was quite surprised to find a Galaxy Titanium with all the trimmings. I suspect it was the cheapest thing bigger than a Corsa they could get.

So it could have been for similar reasons that this woman had the car, although a Merc seems a bit frivolous when a similar sized Ford or Poxhaul would provide equally adequate transport and be much cheaper.

Sounds like he's annoyed by it being a Mercedes ?

I see a huge amount of nurses/carers doing house visits at all times of the day now when I'm out walking the dog. I had no idea of the amount of nurses/carers out there until then.

Depending on their area I guess they'd need a car to get round. I don't see the point in them not being able to take them home.

They work long hard hours and don't get a huge amount of pay.

I'm certainly not begrudging them having access to cars.

As above, a lot of companies will hire a car to go on a training course as most people don’t have business use on their insurance, so if you went in your own car it’s not insured if your on social, domestic pleasure and commuting cover

If the car is at home it’ll make it easier for the AA to find it in the morning.

(speaks an ex-Merc 2nd gen A Class owner - a very practical smallish car but of questionable build quality and reliability)

My first thought was -insufficient info, designed to lead readers astray. Poor journalism? Staff Nurse and Mercedes are not words which naturally gel together. "Also owns a BMW". Really? Shome mishtake shurely, when we have been more accustomed to associating Staff Nurse with "Food Bank". Something doesn't add up here, and that's before considering the more important issues of the criminal acts and covering up referred to.
