I really enjoy riding at night. Living close to the centre of a city I find the roads much more civilised after about 7pm and quite often go out for a ride after 9pm and feel like I have the roads to myself. I find I have many more close passes during the day as thats when people are commuting or generally rushing to get nowhere fast.

Like others above I find I get less hassle and more room at night. I suspect that good bright lights get seen earlier than many drivers spot the bike in daylight.

I like riding at night, but haven't done as much leisure riding in the dark this year because of the wet, flooded and muddy state of the roads.

Pedestrian gates are always open, except for culling seasons.

I ride big miles in the dark - I generally feel safer and more visible and have never had any issues night riding.
Pedestrian Culling, who would have thought it ?

On a serious note I allways feel safer at night ,cars seem to pass wider on average and theres less of them.being dazzled by oncoming cars not dipping their headlights early enough is allways a problem though.

Most of my first rides were in the dark on lit city roads. I didn't notice any difference between then and the ones during the day, I find almost everybody gives me a lot of room.

What I found useful in the dark is seeing the lights of drivers behind, especially in the wind where it can be difficult to hear somebody is there. Of course you cannot rely on this, plenty of drivers forget to put on their lights!
