Not Riding New Bike

Anyone bought a new bike and got rid before riding it?

I bought a CAADX 105 2014 in November, in preparation for winter weather. I fitted some 37mm Top Contact Winters. It's a beautiful bike but I like riding by entry level Allez Triple 2011 with 23mm tyres. I just don't fancy 37mm tyres on clear roads and I can't be arsed putting thinner tyres on for now.

In fact in last 7 weeks since buying the CAADX I've only missed one day of riding, and although the weather was fing 'orrible I could have ridden in it.

So, I feel like I've wasted my money and I'm seriously thinking of returning it under their 90 day return policy!

n+1 you say? I've also got a boardman road team which is sidelined after an accident last year. Just waiting for a payout before getting it repaired.

I got the CAADX mainly for the cold, snowy, icy weather conditions that haven't materialized in my area. I'm not sure how the bike and tyres are going to behave anyway once the weather turns for the worse.

So I'm now not that convinced I actually need this new bike. Undoubtedly, there will be a few days when my Allez isn't going to cut it, but I'm almost exclusively (winter tactic) riding loops of a 11.3 mile circuit, which is well treated regardless because the gritters and snow ploughs have their base on this stretch.

Anyone else regretted purchase?

It's a funny one isn't it. U look at something beautiful and need it badly. Then when uv got it the red mist wears off and maybe u didn't need it so much after all.

That said, I agree with smokeys, the worst weather is yet to come. I did an acceleration wheel spin out of my drive yesterday. I'm loving (my first ever) road bike but I do wonder whether I need an x bike too

Well I've returned the bike and got my money back. Although I will probably still get a winter bike I won't be spending too much on it if I do. Although the CAADX is a lovely bike I won't ride it for 8-9 months of the year as I have 2 decent road bikes. Once I get out of my village I'm quite happy riding loops of well treated roads during the winter so wouldn't expect to miss that many days if I didn't get an ice bike.

Bought a subway 6 months ish ago and tomorrow will be the the 1st time i will have ridden it as the commuter in at the LBS, i could use the boardman but it does not have mudgaurds and i do not like to leave it at work anyway.

Yeah maybe the subway would be a good choice for me. Could stuck marathon winter tyres on. What mudguards are good for the subway? And is 18" considered a medium?

i did something similar about october time i got the cube nature pro and i have only riden about 41 miles on it so far. i bought it to commute and winter riding and i have commuted once, i keep looking out the window in the morning and see it raining, windy or frosty and say no i'll walk instead.
i also have the cube agree sl road bike

I've done 20mi on a £2k bike I bought in October if that's any use? My virtually identical winter bike has done many thousands of miles in everything down to - temperatures though.

Have to weigh it all up. Is a new bike with winter kit, really required for the riding you do?

That's what I don't know unfortunately as roads have been unusually frost and ice free when I've ridden. I'm determined to ride every day where possible so only a matter of time before I encounter the adverse conditions. Seriously considering a subway from Halfords as can get it for £170 and sticking ice tyres on.

37mm tyres are brill. You can ride over some horrid surfaces and feel like you're wafting along. Try that on 23mm

I still have the desire for N+1, but I bought at the top of my budget 2 years ago & just clean/maintain the one bike. I love it - mid-summer or mid-winter - makes the choice of which bike to take out much easier

And 23mm tyres are fine - I just avoid cycling in sub-zero.

I don't want to avoid cycling in any conditions though. I need my daily fix

Got a mate who bought a Cervello R3 a couple of weeks ago, she reckons she is not going to ride it till the spring as long as it's dry. tried to talk her round but she is having none of it. I want to have a go on it.
