This reminds me of the Molly Campbell debate, which aroused similar heated passions. I posted on here in a very similar vein that we had no idea about the mother's circumstances and most posters didn't appreciate that in Lahore pretty young Molly might actually enjoy a pleasant and fun lifestyle. Most poured scorn on the idea that she might actually be better off in Pakistan.
Many months later after it had all gone off the radar my wife and I met up with somebody we know from Lewis, who happens to know the family very well. He was less than complimentary about the mother and made it clear that she would be having difficulty supporting her, er, lifestyle without the financial benefits her daughter had been bringing into the family home - just as I had suspected all along.
