Well done. I would have done exactly the same. The cop should have known you were allowed. In this instance, the copper is the idiot.

Possibly in fairness to the officer I can only assume he was from out of town and not fully aware of where we can and can't cycle. The reason I wasn't forthcoming with him was because I didn't like his attitude from the off.

I would have taken it a step further, and accepted the ticket while keeping schtum. Then don't pay the ticket, and carry out your own defence when you are brought before the court.
See his face then, as he contemplates a career patroling some run down scheme for the rest of his days!

PS. I'm not anti Police, in fact I am a retired cop. But that one sounds like a plonker.

The point for me is not knowing (all) the rules is fine. Making mistakes is fine. However when taking an action which could result in an arrest, you've got to know you are standing on lawful grounds!
