Now that the religious thread has slowed down can we talk about immigration

I'm a Plastic Paddy (My Grandad on my Fatherside was Irish) and his side of the family has historically moved from Wales (3rd or 5th Century) to Ireland till the start of the 20th century and ended up in Scotland (Mother's side was always there), I've moved for work Scotland-Ireland-Scotland-England and Ive have/had (GRTS) relatives in England, Australia and Canada. So its a bit kettle, black to slag of migrants IMO. Although like all aspects of life you get good people and bad people; it just a pity the bad people spoil it for the others; its a bit like good cyclists and RLJ, pavement Ninja's.

Immigration has a long history, nowadays if you want to go you don't have to carry a shield and a sword and if you want to complain about it you don't need to paint yourself with woad - progress.

It's not a simple yes/no argument, though, in the sense that simply saying that a country needs to look seriously at its immigration policies does not make you a racist or a fascist, and I would like to think I am far from being that myself.

As I pointed out, I am the child of people who moved to the UK because they couldn't find work in Ireland, and I'm extremely grateful that I was brought up where I was. My early childhood was very Irish, but set in England. However, I was also surrounded by other immigrants, mainly from Ireland, but also from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Mauritius, Jamaica and Malaysia and the Phillipines (amongst others). There were very few 'English' people in my neck of the woods. That mix of cultures enriched my childhood, and helped shape my views today; I have spent my whole adult working life working with different cultures, and I love doing so.* However, I think that long term, the UK probably will introduce some kind of stronger immigration controls, and I think that may be a necessary step.

*Please appreciate this is not meant to be an elaborate 'some of my best friends are black' type argument. It's just true info about my upbringing.

Agree with Fnaar.
I came to live here 30 years ago.
Was brought up in a small Italian village, usual story, no jobs, nothing to do.
Could have emigrated to a bigger Italian city, but always fancied to live in the UK - the country of freedom, we used to call it.
Probably now the UK has no more need of economic immigrants, unless they are highly skilled professionals.
The times when people could refuse jobs they felt beneath them are coming to an end here.

My family are immigrants in both sides.

My father's side came over from Germany in the 5th centuary and my mothers came over from France around 1066

Funny, I'm the other way round, Mother is of Saxon stock, and Father, Norman. No, his name wasn't Norman, his ancestry probably was.

Hence, I'm not only an Archer, but a Grundy too. Cue theme music...

I'm all for immigration, but I do wonder if we ought to have a one-in, one-out system - get rid of a few of our less desirable 'natives' in exchange. Trouble is, who do we off load them onto?
