Immigrants both sides for me too.
Fathers lot settled near Bolton in 1066 from Normandy, but had come from Denmark 200 years earlier
and Mothers lot settled near Edinburgh in the 1500's from the Netherlands but started off in China a generation earlier

If you go back to Victorian times, I come from German piano salesmen.

Us Germans like to move around Europe, we've had a couple of real good goes at it..... next time.

I am not sure that saying your forefathers (and mothers, no sexism pleae) came to England 1,000 years ago counts as an immigrant, I think we shouldf be labelling immigrants as those that have arrived in the UK since maybe the late 60 or 70. Obvioulsy there had been an influx from Eastern Europe after those countries joined the EU.

I don't particularly mind as long as they pay or work here i.e. no free hand outs, try to integrate with us by speaking the same language, respect and accept our laws, not isolating themsleves into ghettos and don't run round wearing backpacks with wires sticking out of them.

Why not? The point is that these islands have been populated by people from overseas since the last ice cap receded. They are responsible for our language, our customs, everything we 'are'.

The Romans founded many of our cities. The Saxons and Vikings, our language. The Normans, perhaps our obsession with class. Italians, Chinese and Indians have given us most of our favourite 'national dishes'. Who knows what the lasting legacy of Eastern Europeans will be - food, language, culture?

I'd make room by kicking out anyone who's a member of the BNP/EDF etc. Not sure that Afghanistan deserves them. Not that most of them would last long in a really difficult place, I suspect.[/quote]

The good bits and the bad bits...
Errr, i'm struggling to think of a positive fact where i myself benefit from immigration. Thats a selfish statement, but still a pertinant one.
The bad bits..
Many live in HMOs. Any on the estates where you live ?...where i live,(normal 60s council housing ) most of the houses that were brought and improved have now changed hands into private landlords, and become HMOs.
Therefor, parking a car is three times harder than it used to be. Four houses of the surrounding 15 or so in my area have become HMOs, many more than that in the surrounding area...it fcuks the whole system up when there were precious few parking spaces anyway.
Bin collection day ? There are specific rules about what the council will take and where they will take it from. EVERY week, i put the bins out, i pick up other people bags of rubbish and put it ON the bins (the correct place)EVERY week, the Polish miserable barsteward who won't even speak to you when you tried to smile and say hello the first time you met him)..takes them back off and puts them on the floor. Why? i wish i knew..Result ?....they don't get collected.
Now you're asking, why don't you have a word with him, a friendly one. Already tried, attitude the size of a supertanker. I;ll just carry on winning every other week or so.
In the meantime, the council have to do regular sweeps with a van to collect the rubbish the lorries wont take...extra cost to you and me, the tax paying public.
He's just one, the other house just round the corner dump bags of rubbish innapropriately, another house down the road can't even be bothered with a bin , they just dump all their stuff in carrier bags on collection day...it doesnt get collected of course...it requires the attention of the secondary expense of the extra van and crew to clear it up.
This used to be an OK estate, but over the last 5 years or so, ive seen it go downhill quite markedly...faster with the increase of HMOs. A transient population doesnt generally give a fig about how the place looks.

Schools ? There was a programme on TV the other week re a school in Peterborough that doesnt have ONE single child with English as a first language. No big deal about that in itself, but the cost of administering it all must be monumental...who's paying...the good old taxpayer.

Work ? If you're old enough, remember with me the 70s and 80s, particually if you worked in a factory environment. Back then, we were treated with some sort of respect, got a payrise of some sort on a regular basis and generally things were ok. Wind the clock forward to today...in a factory environmant, 70 to 80% of the workforce is immigrant. Do as your told or fcuk off is the attitude. No overtime pay, work till we're finished, you WILL work Saturdays and Sundays...but we'll give you a day off in the week (where's that 'i'm really doing you a big favour' smiley).
Luckily i don't have to work in those conditions, i'm lucky, but thats the way it IS. Consequently there has been a hardening of management attitude to everyone over the years (i havnt had a payrise in 5 years..actually a paydrop).

Work with immigrants ? On a day to day basis i do, and most of them are ok. Polish are generally friendly, Lithuanians are generally morose or standoffish. They're ok, but very hard to talk to, they just dont seem to want to.

Converse and mix with immigrants and you quickly learn some not so attractive attributes they have. Car insurance ? a guy i used to work with married a Polish girl, he was telling me how all their friends come round and when it comes to car insurance...tell the insurance company ANYTHING that'll keep your premium down. Basically lie through your teeth. Once youve got that certificate, you're set...right ?. He tried telling them they wouldnt get a penny if anything went wrong...truth is they were'nt bothered.
Buy a car from an immigrant...not freekin likely, ive seen the countless bodge ups they drive about in (at the same time telling you how brilliant the car is). I wouldnt even buy a bike off them

And now, in my area we have a population (not a small one, maybe a hundred or so) of Africans i assume, possible French as their language. Where the heck have they all come from and why are they here ? They don't appear to be European. Who's paying ? you and me, the good old....

The wife works in a school for handicapped children. Theyve already been told to expect a heavy influx of east european children with handicaps...caused by excessive drinking by their mothers.

The costs to all of us must be phenomenal. Peterboroughs a fine place to learn about how immigration affects people. Come and try it ?

My impression from reading Wikipedia is that Peterborough is a veritable boomtown that attracts lots of immigrants, from the UK as well as abroad.

I'm offering up Bonio, String and Bob Geldof to offset immigration but rather than impose them on another country I say we melt them down and make them into something useful like toilet roll holders.
Or the Viz option ....

You actually must put rubbish on top of the bins for the cleansing? Weird.

Yes, I remember the 80's well, when all workers had decent conditions apart from the catering workers. Most of them where immigrants
Now it's equal opportunities: nobody's got decent working conditions.

Polish are generally friendly.
You said the big Polish bloke doesn't speak to you ... wonder why

This is partly true (I'm a bit dubious on the drunken mothers part though), but the native loafers cost the working immigrant as much.
