We're forever hearing about European immigration being at it's highest levels ever, but it would appear from this thread that 1066 (and for a couple of decades onwards) was quite a popular time to pop into Englandshire - coming over here taking your arrows, killing your king, listing your population...

I met a polish guy yesterday..his 70's feeding seagulls....he saw my.Brighton hove Albion hat with seagull emblem and immediately started a conversation. He was friendly, very pro uk, and a pleasure to meet. Smiling, happy and just a nice person. I passed at least twenty English people, all of whom just hung their heads and blanked me, although a few did mutter awwightmate..when I said hi.

I was pleased this guy immigrated here. Half an hour of my life was better for it.

Friday & Yesterday I had a couple of Albanians plastering my walls, did a goof job too, and very quickly. I never asked them to do it, they just came and did it. It's gonna be bugger to get off.

Now why is it any negative comments regarding immigration are guaranteed to get shouted down (so's to speak) even if they're based on personal experience and facts. Noooo, we mustn't say anything negative.

Didn't expect anything else. Nevertheless...i work with them, live among them, have some as friends. It doesnt stop me seeing the negative impact immigration causes. Is it a serious impact, serious enough to make me hate them....certainly not, . But in a city where there's been a minimum estimate of 16,000 immigrants in the last 10 years, and many say thats a massive underestimate, the impact it has on services, hospitals, doctors, schools, housing, parking, etc etc...is huge.

You actually must put rubbish on top of the bins for the cleansing? Weird.

Yes, I remember the 80's well, when all workers had decent conditions apart from the catering workers. Most of them where immigrants
Now it's equal opportunities: nobody's got decent working conditions.

You said the big Polish bloke doesn't speak to you ... wonder why

This is partly true (I'm a bit dubious on the drunken mothers part though), but the native loafers cost the working immigrant as much.

Rubbish (excess rubbish...i'm sure you knew that) goes on top of the bin. Council rules.
Polish fella doesnt like me ...wonder why ?...C'mon Pat, i'd already stated i'd tried to say hello and smile the first time i met him. I initiated a welcome, he wasn't interested. He doesnt talk to anyone BTW, its not personal, he's just a miserable git
Drunken mothers...its fact. You may not like or believe it, but a former colleage (who's Danish) married a girl who's Polish. When they had their child, the Maternity Unit was bursting at the seams with immigrant families ..i mean truly bursting. It caused a big stir at the time, they (the NHS) knew it was coming, and it caused a lot of fuss...HE was telling me this (an immigrant), it also made the papers at the time.
Anyway...drunken mothers..(perhaps a harsh term)...mothers who come from a culture where alcohol is prevalent, simple mathematics dictates if you have a high proportion of them having children, there'll be the natural increase in the amount of disabled children born to mothers who live in a culture where alcohol is used heavily.
My wife's worked in this school for many years. The increase in immigrant children with disabilities has meant the school has doubled in size. They're currently trying to figure out whether to move the school so they can accomodate the extra.

My impression from reading Wikipedia is that Peterborough is a veritable boomtown that attracts lots of immigrants, from the UK as well as abroad.
Boomtown ...depends on Wikis definition. All the major employers from 20 years ago, as follows.
Perkins Engines...a fraction of the company it used to be. It used to employ thousands.
Baker Perkins......all but gone. Used to be a major employer. Hundreds of jobs gone.
Salvesens............gone. Used to employ circa 400 at its peak.
Brotherhoods......all but gone. Another ex major employer in the city.
Pedigree Petfoods...going.
Hotpoint...............gone. Perhaps used to employ a thousand or two.
Redring..............all but gone.
Thomas Cook..employ hundreds, soon to come under the axe perhaps.
Molins.................used to be a big employer, gone.
There are virtually NO major employers left in Peterborough. Walk past the jobcentre, its bursting. There's no roads paved in gold round here.

There are some major employers actually...but the only way you get in there is through agencies. Substandard employment IMO. Thats not immigrants fault BTW, before i get accused of that as well

no thanks, night bump into you, and you sound like a right miserable git.

Why miserable git Arch ?..because my experience differs from yours ? Bit harsh eh ?

Remember, i didnt say at any point i thought immigration was wrong, i didnt say i don't like them (barring miserable git up the road)...simply stated the negative aspects i see living in a city where immigration is having a major impact...an impact most people outside a city like peterborough have never experienced.

This thread has been a good guide to which forumites I might not want to engage in conversation, should I have the misfortune to meet them.

Clarion, I am suprised at that comment. People are relating their experience of immigration and its affects on them.

Myself I came from an area with a good level of immigration and have mostly postive experiances. Then again I have met a fair few native born b,stards.

The irony is Clarion, if we met on a ride for instance, we'd probably chat amiably just like everyone else. The internet gives some people the opportunity to state something they'd never do in reality...
Like others who aim virtual vitriol at someone who has a different experience than theirs...if we talked face to face, you'd listen, you'd argue your point, i'd argue mine, we may agree on some points....but it'd be done in a friendly amiable way (well it would from my side)..because to do it another way would indicate they're an peanut. There are many many sides to people, one negative side (in your opinion) doesnt make the other a bad person...just someone with a different experience than yours
