You must ride track or off road? I

I don't know a single roadie that dosnt find motorist a problem.

No, I ride on road.

Here you go, your first roadie that doesn't find motorists a problem. I have more problems when I'm driving which, thankfully these days, isn't that often.

There will be plenty of other roadies on here that don't have a problem with motorists.

Can I come out with you then lol. Last year we had three fatalities in a very short space of time. And round my way it's all to common to come across close passes or near crashes between cars etc .

I get a scary close pass once in a while. Sure, they get me angry for a bit, but people make mistakes, even me. What is absolutely inexcusable is a deliberate, calculated, and highly dangerous act of aggression like the one of the Forest of Dean Caravans driver.

Eh, for every terrible driver, there's one fantastic one IME. And I haven't had a pass as close as the one in the video in over a year.

that video made me squeeze my butt cheeks. Had similar once with a lorry, but i think at the time it wasn't a deliberate act of aggression, i think he hadn't seen me and the bollard and realised at the last minute, we were all gonna meet at the same time, and knew there was no way he was gonna stop in time. He blasted his horn, i stopped and he just made it between me and bollard. Good job he didn't hit the bollard eh? He might have killed it!

Sounds a lot better than my last miss. The lorry driver past me as I was doing around 30mph I don't think he realised I would be tucked in behind him and that the traffic was slowing because of red lights. When he realised I was behind him he moved his entire lorry as much as possible towards the kerb. So I skipped onto the other side of the road checking for traffic and gave him a big wave as I passed. Can't believe you would shift 33 tones just to try and annoy one guy on a bike :s

he might of done that, not out of aggression but because he didn't want you to pass up the inside while he was sitting at a red light. I have heard of lorry drivers using this tactic at lights so that they don't have to worry about cyclists coming up the inside. Similar tactic to us taking primary position at lights to stop close overtakes and cars hooking left on us.

Anybody who says they haven't had a close pass or that they don't have a problem with(some) motorists is talking "bollox"!:headshake:
I'm inclined to agree. On the whole i get on ok, i have good communication skills and interact well with drivers. i rarely have trouble at junctions and when a driver makes a mistake i have so far foreseen it and been able to avoid. etc. However, when i do have trouble it is ALWAYS from close overtakes. They are mostly driver error but I've had aggressive ones. Anyone who says they haven't had a problem with this, even if it is only driver error, must live on a different planet.

Yeah, but some people go on as if they're nearly dying on every ride. It makes you wonder why they bother.

that's coz they are! But they also have good experiences that outweigh the knobheads, so they carry on. On every ride to work i bet i get a least 3 close calls, after a good rant i forget about them bcoz i don't have room in my memory bank for them when its full of breathtaking views, sunsets and starry nights. On particularly bad days, when that escalates to ten, i do wonder why, but i also know that I'm unhappy when I'm not cycling, its not only how i keep fit and why my mood is lifted, its also a massive part of my social network.
Driving is risky but people still do it.

Yes. It's what you do with that trivial baggage that matters though. I can yell rude words as well as the best when someone comes near to hurting me. It's just adrenaline, and it goes pretty quickly, and I'm not proud of it after the event. I don't want to get on my bike with a victim mentality every time I get on the saddle. It doesn't do me any good.
Most drivers are good. Some cyclists are crap.
So what?
I think this thread is going a bit off piste imo.

I too don't have many issues with close passes, but the driver in the vid was wwwwaaaayyyy more than a close pass. Horn blaring giving about six inches of room when you have seven - eight feet to the right of you is appalling behaviour which was intentional. And this is what sets this apart from other 'close passes'.

Yes we can discuss the semantics of a close pass and the reasons behind it, most is careless driving ime showing poor judgement. But the vid in the OP was something else. I'm glad the firm has fired him, I only hope now the Police prosecute, whether or not that will happen though I don't know.
I don't think that anybody who posted on this thread would disagree with you, or was making excuses for his behaviour. I'm not delighted that he lost his job, but I'm not exactly weeping either. Any pass when you have to move your right elbow in gets the adrenaline up.
