Well, I also hate ostentatious, inappropriate and ram-down-the-throat displays of material wealth. So I would have found this woman annoying. It's counter cultural to talk like this in a university, particularly one which is as diverse as the student setting. Generally, people at PG level don't have the money to buy big cars (staff don't either), and have made a big sacrifice for their education. As such, most people are there for the love of it not the money, so big cars don't matter particularly. This person would stick out like a sore thumb. Hopefully she'll learn the ropes sooner or later and shut her cakehole.

But surely that would result in less cars on the roads (surely a good thing?) and therefore you should side with the materialistic little bint?

Nice thought. I'm not sure one of the cars would be for her, but both for him, so there'd only be one on the road at a time anyway. She's apparently just about to take her motorbike test anyway...

From the dismissive way she was referring to diesels, and the names of the cars she was discussing, I imagine whatever car he gets, it'll be driven beyond the speed limit fairly often....

Really, she sounded like all the boring bits of Top Gear, without the advantage of having the Hampster to look at.

Of course, the conversation may have been partly for your benefit, Arch. You and anyone else overhearing are supposed to be impressed that she has a boyfriend with that kind of money to waste.

If her kind of man is upset that he has to settle for a boring £30K car rather than a sporty one, they deserve each other, and both deserve your pity.

Deep breaths. Just remember how far above this sort of materialistic nonsense you are.

Breathe in

Breathe out

Breathe in

Breathe out

This would be much easier if I wasn't bunged up with a cold, y'know.

You're quite right. I shall rise above it all, like an Arch shaped hot air balloon.

Now, this Proudhon bloke, am I meant to be flattered?

Your colleague has done nowt wrong so stop bitchin'. So a PhD student is talking about her b/f's next car. Big deal. Each to their own.

Newbie on motorbike + fast = organ donor.
You probably won't have to put up with her for long...

I would not say that a 25-30k vehicle is in any way an "ostentatious, inappropriate and ram-down-the-throat displays of material wealth".

Have you walked around Hampstead lately? Do, you'll soon see why it isn't.

Well, I could say "So a forummer is bitchin' about a conversation she overheard" Big deal, why comment if you don't think it's important?

My main bitch was that as I walked in she was saying "I may have to dump him if he gets a crap car". After a while listening to her I realised that this was a bit of a joke, but it was still important enough for her to sit at a computer, talking to her friend, looking up the various cars they were talking about. I just happen to think people are more important than cars, that's all. If she'd been fretting about his choice of a job, or lumbering himself with a big debt, or doing something that could really mess up his life, I'd have a bit more respect, and assume she actually cared about HIM, not his choice of motor...

It is to me...and it would be an a PG research student setting, where 30K gets you 2 years of a PhD studentship - fees and living expenses. It's all relative. Which is why i'm not interested in walking around Hampstead, being as it is full of posh tw*ts. (I also don't know where it is? Somewhere in London/Surrey?)

Sorry, dom, I'm with Kirstie on this one. I'd have found it annoying too.
The most expensive car we've ever bought cost under £10 000, and our current one was nowhere near that. It's comfortable, reliable, still under warranty and takes 5 people with loads of luggage. I don't need (or want) anything more than that.
I do take the point about Hampstead though. I'd hate to live there. Doubt I'd be allowed in!

North London. It used to be a byword for socialism in the Michael Foot era. ;)
