old 5 speed chain on a fixed

Just putting together a new fixed gear bike and need a new chain.
I have a 5 speed chain lying about and was going to give that a go.

I'm not sure if it is wide enough yet, but i'm assume the chain is probably wide enough 1/8 wide.

Does anyone know of a reason why this would be a bad idea?

5 speed is 3/32" so you need to use matching or thinner chainwheels and cogs.

Yep, didn't think to do the obvious Mr jim55. If the chain wraps OK around the sprocket and chain wheel then you are good to go

yeah

just doing some googling and everyone says that a 5 speed chain is 3/32"

But this chain seems to fit happily on the chain ring, which is 1/8 . So I suspect it isn't a new 5-7 speed chain.

So going to give is a go.

The chain rings (front )are gen a bit thinner (3/32) but it's the rear sprocket that will prob b 1/8 , just get a 1/8 chain cos it'll fit guaranteed ( it's wider than 3/32 ) but a 3/32 won't fit on a 1/8 sprocket
