Sadly I can be a little slow in being forward :blush:, and on this occasion I am going to have to try and find her again to see if there is any mutual interest. I have a name, and the street where she lives - so hopefully it won't be too difficult. I don't even know if she is single though!
Now if @Pat "5mph" had been with you then you would probably be doing the walk of shame from Madames right now :giggle:

She would have got you two together.

I think I realised that M Marsaud was talking guff when in one of the books he expressed a preference for 'la voiture Anglais'.

I mean, can you imagine a Frenchman saying that?!

Sit in your parked car, on her street; look her up on Facebook...

A sensible train company would look at the market, listen to genuine customer feedback, slash prices, and put a guard/guard's van on. They'd be the most popular train company around, and make a squillion pounds, I reckon.

I may be completely ignorant of the economics of trains, however. But I had a dream....
Not quite as simple as that

1. Many platforms not long enough to take extra carriage
2. If you cut a passenger carriage for guards van you massively reduce capacity
3. Many trains are in sets with a drivers compartment at either end- so if you add a guards van, how will they manage when train reaches destination. Its can't go other way with Guards van in front of drive.

These were all built with a Guards/goods compartment (it's that bit at the back of the engine)

Southeastern used to do this a few years ago but as @spen666 says reduction in passenger capacity and as a result revenue shouts louder.

That was also where the Friday evening drinkers used to congregate. On occassion i have known cyclist having their bikes decorated whilst left in there:whistle:

1) Have all the platforms been shortened since the olden days when they were the norm?
2) People can hang onto the side and top like they do on the news, in far flung parts of the globe. What with the summer coming on and all that, it might be quite refreshing.
3) Easy, just put fold-up seats in all the carriages behind the drivers compartment, and hey presto! an instant guards van with room for bikes and fare-dodgers. :okay:

Not simple, but:
1. We already have Selective Door Opening on many trains to cope with that (9 car trains stopping in 4 car platforms is the most common use I've seen), but even if the van could only be used at certain stations, it would be better than the current situation;
2. So let's not do that, then;
3. Couldn't the New Guards Van be low enough for the driver to see over or narrow enough to see around? After all, many locomotives still in use have hoods in front of the driver - most famously the Class 37 that used to pull the pre-electrification Norwich Intercity and are still in use both here and abroad. If done right, it could even be a safety feature with the poor driver not being the first thing to hit an unexpected obstruction!
