Coz they were cr*p, based on my experience of the one my wife-of-the-time had

True

but nice to see a relic of my childhood days

That sort of thing always remind me of the car in the driveway next to my friend's house
it was just sitting there rusting away to itself in all weather - never moved for years

Things is - it was the Millionth Mini
the one millionth mini that rolled off the production line
had a plaque on the dashboard

just rusted away and got scrapped

shame really

Very nice condition BL 1300, this one the higher spec MG version. It's good to see a few of the more run of the mill cars being preserved. A common enough car back in the day (less so in MG or vanden plas versions) but far less popular now than Moggie Minors or Minis

A friend of my grandfather's had an Austin 1300 long past their expiry date. He had it for about 30 years. He used to stuff the box sections with rags soaked in oil to preserve it.

Absolutely everyone knew Sam in his Austin, and seen him no matter where he went. For that reason alone, he decided to change it for a Micra. A few days later, a lorry rear-ended him and destroyed his Micra.

He used to say he had the last car for 30 years and never put a scratch on it. I've had this one for two and a half days and it's wrecked!

My first car after I passed my test was an Austin 1100. Went through a few engines with it.
Bought a wrecked Austin 1300gt from a scrap yard where my mate worked.
Swapped the engine and interior and fancy bits onto my 1100, but left the 1100 gearbox in it.
It used to go like stink up to about 45mph and then run out of gears.
Loved it

My cousin did that with a Seat Ibiza after cooking the original 1L engine. Put a 1.4 in it, mated to the 1L gearbox. Acceleration low down was unbelievable but you quickly ran out of gears.

Mate of mine did that with an Escort Van,swapped the engine but kept the gearbox. Luckily he fitted a 1.8 BDA twin cam which revved a lot higher (over 9,000 rpm) than the 1.1 pushrod motor originally fitted.

Back in the day when I was young and had hair i had numerous minis. 2 spring to mind, clubman with a 1380 cc highly strung engine had twin su carbs then twin webbers ended with single holley. The other was clubman estate with a nova engine shoehorned in with major mods. A few people at the time had done astra gte transplants and rover V8s. Outrageous acceleration with crap mpg. Most reliable the nova engined one. Absolute rot boxes, but food fun.
