I've paid for two cars on a debit card, both went through without any problem. The first time I called Santander the day before to ask this be noted on my account. The reply was this couldn't be done.

As for the thread? Scary, very scary. This is precisely how financially naive individuals get scammed. The amount of personal information accy posts on a public website, and not just in this thread, is breathtaking.

Well I've finally signed up for Halifax online banking! When it came to the Memorable Information bit I used another name, not the ones I tried yesterday, plus some numbers. It did say the information has to have letters AND numbers. Obviously me only using letters yesterday cocked up the system. Er, what do I do now, now that I'm signed in? Before anyone says/rants 'WE'VE TOLD YOU! YOU HAVE TO TALK TO YOUR HALIFAX BRANCH, OR CONTACT THEM ON THEIR HELPLINE!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬, couldn't I just pay with my card now?! 🤔 Ok, don't answer that!😬 I'm going to phone the helpline tomorrow, instead of travelling to 4 miles away Accrington town centre, where my nearest Halifax branch is! Why not just go and see them you may ask?! Well, it's in the opposite direction of the motorway that leads to Newton-Le-Willows, so that'll put another hour on the limited time I have in the day to go and view the car, so phoning them will be quicker! One more question! Will it be fairly easy to drive to Newton-Le-Willows and to find the place!🤔 🙄 😬

I hope you will be paying with a credit card, not a debit card. I believe a credit card will give more protection than a debit card.

Better still if the credit card gives you cash back or points.

I don't have a credit card.🤔

Uh oh, I feel a thread coming on...

If you do get a credit card, my advice would be to avoid Virgin Money. Their security systems are worryingly terrible and their customer support isn't up to much. They have recently been bought by Nationwide, but it's going to take a while for them to unpick the damage done by the previous owners CYBG.

Accy has been very quiet today. Hes either at Coutt's demanding some bullion, or at Southeby's checking out the blower Bentleys.

He doesn't get up early, late riser, so time is a bit limited to get his old boy's racer car !

No-one on here has said that, we've all said contact your bank, the Halifax, for help from them as they are the best placed people to help.

And to answer the question that followed that piece in bold, not if the seller doesn't accept it. They stated online payment only, according to yourself.

I don't have a credit card.🤔

unless you're ineligible for some reason, it's sensible to get one aligned to where/what you spend

avoid fee paying cards unless you'll spend enough to cover fees plus differential benefit vs. non-fee paying

don't be swayed by the 'value' of benefits you won't use

never, never, never, not even once, never fail to pay off balance in full each month, just set it to pay in full automatically, never fail on this, never, never, never

you're currently missing at least 1% cashback on everything that could've been put on credit card, plus the interest on cash sitting in your current account for longer, because you do have an interest paying account don't you, and you have added legal rights/protection when buying with credit card

When you take out a new credit card, for instance with M&S, you get 25 months of zero interest rates on purchases.

Keep your £7k in a savings account and pay off fully at the end of the zero rate period.
