On the way home today on a fairly fast straight I was catching up another cyclist. When I was close enough I looked behind, saw a car further up the road, and indicated to overtake.

As I was overtaking the car also over took me, now this made me feel as though I had executed my overtake at a bad time. The car was fully in the other lane and I don't think I was too close to the other cylist, but it didn't feel right.

I obviously thought I had time for the move and the driver to see (there where no beeps or swerving etc), but in hindsight I think if I'm in the same situation again I'll slow a bit as it hadn't panned out as I planned/assumed. Also feeling a bit bad for not slowing and saying something at the time.

Any thoughts?

No foul I think, the driver must have clocked your indication and gave you both plenty of room?

As long as I breathe, I attack.

If you were already indicating to overtake and you were in front of the car then you technically had right of way, the car would not overtake another car overtaking a cyclist.

That said the car did use the other lane so had anticipated your move.

I've had that happen to me - a bit weird I think but as long as the other lane is clear I guess it's ok.

By signalling you could have been turning right or crossing to other side of the road, no? You only mention that the road was straight.

How would the driver know you we're only passing another cyclist?

One did just now - in fact, he overtook the three cars that were overtaking me

No major difference than overtaking cyclists riding two abreast?

I have pooped myself when the car overtaking me was overtaken by another car though
