I think IIRC the engine was like 3 V engines pointing towards one another to form a triangle.

I think thats right.
The sound used to rattle the whole house when they thundered by ,usually just leaving the station, so they were working hard.
The 125's were a lot quieter and barely shook the windows.

The Deltic was the ugly as sin shed on wheels with the rather clever engine wasn't it? Used in RN minesweepers or somesuch.

That's the one. A mobile cloud of cancer. Loathed and derided in its time by the steamheads, now loved and admired.

A bit more complicated than that. Two stroke diesel, crankshaft at each corner of the triangle, pistons heading towards each other but no cylinder head.
