Photos were taken in May 2008, so memory is becoming vague, but it took a couple of days for the pair to discover the food source and start using it regularly. Then from them tolerating my presence within 10 feet to the male first taking food from hand was no more than 4 hours elapsed time. The female was much more circumspect and only started about 2 days later, when she was assured I wasn't going to eat her!
In 2009, she turned up with another partner, was hand tame from the off, and had to show him the ropes! Birds have very different "personalities", so some will readily become hand tame, especially when they have a hungry family to feed, while others will remain totally aloof, and have to take their chances competing with bolder and possibly bigger rivals. Curiously, Great Tits seem much easier than Robins, despite Robins' greater familiarity and apparent boldness. If anyone wants to try feeding live mealworms (You're going to love the way they tickle, to quote Baloo), I recommend this supplier: several birdfood sellers, such as Haiths, advertise mealworms but order them from Livefoods and add a premium percentage to the price - cut out the middleman!
