Well, as yet, this is my first and potentially only tour (although, depending on how knackered I am at the end of this one, there may well be more) so I just invested some mega big bucks in a fine set of Tesco panniers. They're DEFINITELY gonna need some waterproof stuff in or around them!!

I'll ask my cousin (Nurse Prac) for some biohazard bags. Just cos I like the idea haha.

No pannier will be completely waterproof in a downpour - you need some sort of plastic bag as a liner.

The best I've ever had were bags once used by the Post Office for wrapping packages that started to split in the post. About 25% of solicitors files sent in to the costs office in 1984-6 arrived in these! - I buit up quite a stock.

Since then I've used either bags for life or the purpose made liners sold by outdoor shops.

We have always used plastic rubble sacks as liners.
Very strong and durable, available in most garden centres, hardware stores etc.

We use some DHB (wiggle own brand) and agu panniers without anything else and they've been fine in some pretty major prolonged downpours.
