Me too, I'm glad I held on to it as it's a good size for keeping my petrol ration coupons clean and tidy:okay:

I realise I haven't informed them when I changed address, and I still have a paper one too, though it looks extremely dog eared now!

I can't remember what it was for, but a year or so ago the 20 year old needed something with a photo ID on it and because the government had a photo on record from their driving license they didn't need to submit a second photo. So it might be if you've had a passport photo in the last few years they won't need a new photo for your driving license, they just use the one on record. I know I was surprised when it happened because I'd expected every different department would need a separate verified photo because that' how it would have happened.

Remember once you go photo license you have to pay to renew it every 10 years. Still on a very tired looking green and pink one here.

You'd best do so, assuming you still drive. They get very antsy if they can't send NIPs to the right address!

Precisely...that's what I meant by antsy ;)
Why would you put yourself to more trouble by keeping your old one?
Because the old one doesn't run out every 10 years? Not having a photo ID driving license is yet to cause me a problem.

A photo driving licence is useful as ID - e.g. collecting foreign currency, picking up stuff from the sorting office, test riding bikes at Evans...
It just seems like a faff for the sake of filling in a form every ten years. As much as I'm not into ID cards it's useful when I have to pick up parcels from the Post Office. And hiring cars and travelling abroad is going to be difficult without the photocard.
Post Office don't need photo ID, I collect all my parcels by waving a credit card at them to prove who I am. I rented a car in the States last year with my old driving license and a passport, no hassle, likewise in the UK. I've driven through Europe without any issue on using an old license, although the German policeman did whinge a bit that it was a tad lacy after pulling me over and drug testing me at 3am.

As I say, no hassle and I'm not paying out £70 (or whatever it is) to replace it every decade, or forgetting like a chunk of people in the UK have so far and are driving around illegally thanks to the fact that their driving licenses now need renewing in a way their old ones never did.

I don't recall it being £70 a year or two back, not as expensive as a passport

https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-fees

£14 for 10 year renewal...and free to get one with change of address
OK, had thought they were dearer than that (and only £20 to change over) I wonder if they were more expensive when they first came out, although I doubt it. Still to curmudgeonly to change mind :-)

Customers with paper driving licences

Paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 will remain valid and should not be destroyed.

If you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photocard only.

So I'm sticking with my paper one :okay:

I agree, I've never encountered a problem in not having a photo ID one, anyway, I'm attached to my green paper license like I am to my 1970's national insurance card.

I've read about instances of people updating and having a card returned with entitlements missing, that's scary, there is no way I'd pass my motorbike test now.
I've heard claims, but never met anyone who it's happened to. It's all online now and you can go to the .gov site and check your entitlements any time you want to.

Or I can just look at my paper license. ^_^
