Just wondering if anyone has a clever way of going south down Park Lane (entering from Curzon St) and getting onto South Carriage Drive?

Can you cycle through Curzon gate for example after using the Deanery St crossing?

Or is the easiest bet to use the bus lane and manoeuvre through three lanes of traffic to get onto the roundabout? Am a very confident cyclist but sure there must be a better way than that..

On cruzon st, near the top of the hill turn right on to St audley st, then left onto Stanhope gate, then use the lights to cross over to the far lane and cycle down.

I have no problem crossing all the lanes but I do it a lot so I’m used to people driving like nutters down there. Good luck.

The London cycle maps don't have any recommended routes leading onto Park Lane or Piccadilly from Curzon Street. All the nice alternatives are longer, but don't often go that way so someone might know something.

It is a horrible roundabout though, with car drivers not being sure where they are going etc.

I go south all the way down park lane, around the round about and off down to victoria, easist way round imo. you can get onto the roundabout in the middle by using a toucan crossing at the big arch (no idea what it's called) from inside the park, this would mean cycling down lovers lane. but this only goes diangonaly across, and thus if you want to go anyhwere else it is pretty useless.

it's best to go down park lane, know the lane your meant to be in and get in it just before the lights at the roundabout and stick to that lane.

Thanks chaps all good advice. Going to try a few variations as part of my new commute from Savile Row to Richmond.

First try will be waiting at Curzon St until the peds cross at Deanery St then the traffic should be relatively calm and will give me enough time to get to the SCR roundabout and cross all 4 lanes.

That's almost my route (I go Mayfair -> Teddington).

I get into Hyde Park across Park Lane pretty easily at the lights @ Grosvenor St

FYI - my preferred (quickest) route after 2 years of trial and error.

Mayfair -> Hyde Park (either direction round)

Queens Gate, carry straight on down until King's Road

King's Road (actually moves quicker than Fulham Rd) ... but see below

Left at junction with Edith Grove (This looks like a bit of a round-about detour, but it avoids a lot of snarl-ups, and I also hate the cycle lane on New King's Road as I've had one 'off' and numerous near misses on it).

Round Chelsea harbour - straight on and round the Hurlingham ... the second part of this after Wandsworth Bridge is virtually traffic free and you can really open up

Putney bridge

Lower Richmond Road

Queens Ride

Priory Lane -> Richmond Park

Queen's Gate looks like a good bet. I'm going to try that tonight down to the Fulham Road then turn right.

The Chelsea Harbour diversion looks a little long and I'm used to cycling along the NKR (I used to do Richmond - Canary Wharf). Looks like you do 3 sides of a square, whereas NKR is just a straight line. Safer for sure though.

Will report back tomorrow.

Tried it both ways, seems to be all fine. Waiting for the traffic to stop on Park Lane before entering from Curzon St seems to work well but the Park Lane roundabout into Hyde Park is manic and the New King's Road road surface is appalling but aside from that it seems all good.. Here's the route I took.. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3169941
Thanks for advice.

It's not the safety aspect that does it for me ... I've found that the 'longer' diversion actually takes the same amount of time as straight down NKR (mainly because of the choke points along King's Road), and it's more enjoyable too as you can really cane it.

I'd be VERY cautious along NKR from Parson's Green onwards ... I've been hit by an overtaker_and_left_turner and lost count of the times people have pulled out from the side roads on the left without looking.

Having said that, the only real road-rage I've encountered was just before Wandsworth Bridge ... guy actually got out of his car and started gangsta-limping towards me and gesticulating before he realised once I got off my bike that I was (a) A lot bigger than him, and ( Seriously pissed off.

That's almost the route I take, except I cut across Walham Green/Crondace Road.

(However, I only ever do this route in the late evening or at night, so the park is empty. It's probably slower too.)

I might try Walham Green / Novello St / Parson's Green Lane / Hurlingham Road next time.

I do Surbiton - Oxford st daily, go up to upper grosvenor st ad then across at the lights, use the bike lane south in the park and then bat along south carriage drive.

else head out south from saville row onto piccadilly and tackle it that way.
