Well in all fairness, they do spend a lot of time just having a chat. It's not the most exciting thing to watch so I only watch the highlights and even that seems to be boring for me, and I like cycling. If I watch highlights of other sports, its far more interesting.

Criterium racing and those red bull down "time trials" are far more interesting.
Apart from cricket of course as nothing ever happens there.

Then there’s the 10,000 metre runners who just jog around the track until the penultimate lap before putting a bit of effort in 😉

No-one has a right to be paid to do something they love.

If you don't love it, choose the job that pays you best.

*PROFESSIONAL* sport is a free market (more-or-less), and it's entertainment. There is no correlation between earnings and skill, or earnings and dedication*. Just as Mrs Browns Boys pays better than my Bikeshed Repairs Youtube channel - life ain't fair!

*otherwise Roy Castle would have beaten Mr Branson into space.

UCI many years ago set the minimum wage for both World and Continental teams. It about 34K Euros PA. There is also minimum wage for semi pros and I think it just blow Euros 25K.

Many do it for love and have other means of support. For most it will last a few years. But lots of great memories though not to mention the crazy level of bike porn.

What about the ultra endurance scene where it costs people to take part and there is no salary involved even for the top riders.
