Hey All

I have a cheque made payble to me , however I dont have my own account, does anyone know if I can pay it into my Wifes Account ? We have the same surname and she has a Lloyds TSB Current Account.

Thanks

Pay it in to her account - they won't check (geddit), in my experience. If it is noticed, just offer that it was done in error and think again.

hmm. probably not. Maybe with ID? Could use one of those cheque cashing places, but they'll take a commission.

Maybe sign up for an account...

my instincts would be, no.

the reason being is they have no proof that you are married.

I tried to change our address with Barclays and was told my wife would have to update her address in person as I could not prove that we were not separated or something random like that.

If your wife's account was a joint account you would be able to.

how come you've not had this problem before?

I once paid a cheque, made out to me, into a complete stranger's account by getting a digit wrong on the sort-code. They got the money even their name was completely different to mine.

If you sign the cheque on the back then anyone can put it into their account.... just ask your wife's bank? The cheque is returned to the sender's bank from your wife's bank so doesn't have to be cleared by your bank first [because you haven't got one.]

Not so. Most cheques nowadays are pre-printed and crossed "a/c payee only" i.e you cannot endorse them.

You're right ASC- just looked at mine... no option then to open an account- or put it into a building society savings account gb?

[Boggled that the last time I wrote a cheque from my personal chequebook was 2008!]

Just an aside on the subject of diligent cashiers, I picked up my daughters cheque book by mistake a couple of years ago and wiped out her credit balance by issuing cheques....
