Another 12 mile ride this morning taking it up to over 50 now with the butterfly bars fitted and I really feel the swap has made a huge difference on the usability of the bike.

Being a nexus 8 speed hub novice I am enjoying riding the Fahrrad which is equipped with one .

So far i have completed about 80 miles using it and I must admit I was very sceptical about it to start with but not so much now.

I could certainly see one being useful on a folding bike.

Well the Specialized Roubaix has found a new owner .
The Fahrrad is continuing to impress me or more precisly the Nexus hub and it's gearing on this weekends ride i have shown it some of the short climbs we have locally and it's coped with ease and it actualy seems easier to go an easier gear and spin it out rather than my normal way of trying to turn a harder gear ratio

Just got to decide what is the next project

Of course not: I'm that annoying team leader that says: "What do you think?"

Of course, I shouldn't have: his response was, "I thought if we swap the blocks, and fit them the other way up..."

Probably should add, this particular colleague is a fairly experienced metalworker. I've watched him rebuild a dead 7 speed hub from a parts box with no instructions, basic tools, and some very bad language. He also has a wicked sense of humour.

Having suffered a flat tyre this morning, I thought I would get to grips with my outstanding jobs on the Fahrrad as that was the bike that I got a puncture on.

So first job was to replace the tube after working out how to remove the nexus hubbed rear wheel. But on removal of the Islabike branded tyre I was amazed how thin the carcass was so decided to swap both tyres for a set of marathons from another of my bikes and cracked on with that .

Another task that needed doing was to fit the brake levers the correct way round so I wasn't looking at the underside any more.

Whilst doing the tyre swap I noticed the rear brake pads were worn out so they were done as well.

It took me a couple of attempts to refit the rear wheel due to working out how the nexus hub cable fitted etc etc but all working on short road test.

Anyone selling a pr of 26" marathon tyres??

The perils of buying second hand... the list seems to go on with my Thorn Club Tour.

It went back the the LBS as the front cantilever was ineffective following the rebuild, there's a thread somewhere else on this. The words of wisdom on Cycle Chat was to change the cantilever for a V brake, so off to the LBS. They've looked and decided a V won't fit as the front rim is too wide for the forks. I understand both wheels were replaced about 15 years ago by the original owner when changing from 26" to 700c tyres.

It seems the rear rim (Mavic 719) is 22mm wide and the cantilever works just fine, the front, also a Mavic, is 27mm wide, leaving little room for the brakes to work effectively.... aaaggghhhhh. They're looking to source a suitable 36 spoke rim, fortunately they recycle a lot of cycles, so hopefully they'll find a suitable used rim.

The thing is, it's not something I'd thought about when buying a used bicycle, maybe I should have taken my vernier gauges knowing that the wheels had been changed.

I was only looking to find a cheapish good bike to start riding again, I'd better stick at it now

Ho hum, fortunately I'm still enjoying the rather costly process!

PS The Carradice Barley saddlebag has arrived and is going to look grand on it, looking forward to that

Might have something used - what price are you looking for, and posted to where?
