In Holkham Hall are three Brussels tapestries depicting Europe, the New World and Asia. For the New World, the weavers had seen artefacts brought back by travellers but not having been there, they appear to have been a bit creative about how the souvenirs fitted in with the lifestyles of the people there.

Feathered head decoration and arrow sets seems to have been interpreted as being used by a race of rather portly be-feathered Amazons, including one with an alligator on a leash. Various other items are dotted around the scene.

Nah, I never thought that, I always made the Indians win. I had quite a few models, and made them a wigwam out of a chamois leather.

One of my favourite stories on Jackanory was The Indian in the Cupboard.

Reminds me of my first ever project at Dundee... a group project to research how the Kwakiutl Indians built their communal long huts on stilts, elevated timber buildings with fire pits in the centre lined with clay and cooking stones supported on the timbers.

[Edit: It was part of a series of projects to make us look at how to work with the natural world not against it... not many people got it.
Made some of us appreciate that white Europeans have ruined the world given to us.]

great photos. really fascinating stuff.

i've just finished a book about John Rae, the explorer and it was fascinating to see how much early trade in Canada was helped by the natives, with very little conflict and a high degree of respect from the europeans there - but not the ones at home, who viewed them as savages. the Inuits that had relics from the lost Franklin expedition were thought to have killed the men - which would then be a somewhat stupid notion to display relics from the lost party. one reason Rae wasn't believed was his friendship with natives.

Thoroughly enjoyed those...and one thing occured to me while looking.
I sat there thinking, some have a distinctly oriental look, Japanese, something i'd never noticed before, there must be some ancient connection ?
5 seconds on google...yup, it's believed that american indians are descendants of pacific peoples, japanese included, from long ago.
Well you learn something new every day !!
